Major breaking: Trump finally ends H1B Visa

President Donald Trump is preparing to sign a proclamation today that would impose a new $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications, in one of the most sweeping overhauls yet of the program central to the US technology industry, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The proclamation would also eliminate the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which will affect 1.5 million people, and replace the current lottery-based selection process with a highest-bidder system.

If anyone believes this will result in US workers being paid more money they’re in for a rude awakening.

@ba

All H1b and foreign national, please pull out all your money from market. It gonna crash soon!! Better you have money in hand to survive!! I already pulled my 348k in savings.
You know why you had that money heavy into US market right? not because you love America but because you were getting gains that were pretty awesome and you trusted that the market is stable to provide returns.
Don't make it seem like you are doing a favor to the markets by doing that. You are an investor and you wanted a return so you invested. Sick of people pretending to do America a favor by investing. It isn't you. It is American stability and growth.
Btw, a naturalized American citizen who is thankful to America and American people AND the American system + constitution.

funny, now who will work extended hours? John and David will have to work hard for once in their lives ;)

Response: there are so many Americans working two jobs after thousands of factories were shutdown and jobs shipped to China, Mexico and other countries.

Many middle class families lost good pay and steady jobs.

Check out American colleges and high schoolers, they work hard to keep up their grades and many study or work on projects during weekends.

Balance work and life, don’t be a slave to your employer. F their profits, F their loss and F your boss.

Here are the numbers you need to understand the effects of the $100,000 fee for H1-B visas:

  • Right now fees for these visas can run up to about $6,000-$10,000 depending on processing, so this is a huge change

  • The visa cap for FY2025 was 65,000 regular visas and 20,000 visas for workers with special expertise; this cap was reached in early December 2024

  • There are probably about 700,000 people on H1-B visas in the United States right now, though exact figures are not available

  • 71% of applications in FY2024 were for workers from India, and 12% from China

  • 64% of applications in FY2024 were in "computer-related" occupations, with typical salaries around $120,000

  • Renewals make up about 2/3 of applications, and it's not clear whether this fee will apply to renewals

  • The leading users of the program were Amazon, Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Google

  • The costs implied by the new fees under these companies' current usage of the visas could range from about $1 billion for Amazon down to $400 million for Google

  • If H1-B workers send, say, 20% of their earnings home, remittances to India alone could be in the range of $12 billion per year

Quite pleased with this change. Although, do you think Cisco will hire more contingent workers instead of going the H1b route?

Red badge in US are predominated by H1B workers from those agencies. In short term, CISCO will hire more red badges from other countries if those agencies raised the price or not able to supply.

The cancelling of OPT is interesting - combined with H1B change, Do you think foreign students will reduce significantly or they will flood into graduate schools / especially in the Ph D programs to out-last the reminding years of Trump administration?

It seems like we’re at an exciting crossroads in technology! While the current systems have served us well, some excellent, fantastic options are now available in the USA.

Traditional internet technology can’t keep up anymore, and there’s something truly revolutionary on the horizon: the Quantum Internet. Its quantum firewalls and advanced quantum chips represent a significant leap forward in our tech capabilities!

However, this company has yet to tap into these innovations or connect with the leaders in this dynamic field. There's so much potential for growth and improvement!

Sincerely, I don’t care if companies will offshore more jobs. A huge number of jobs require or MUST be local in US. So there will be enough job postings here. My wife is seeking for a job now.

No one holds board members, CEOs, executives, or legal teams accountable for the legitimacy of their management of H-1B and offshoring programs and investments. However, a closer examination reveals troubling issues. These individuals were aware of the consequences of their actions. The multi-million dollar salaries have fostered a greed for power at all levels. As a result, Cisco lacks recognizable star talent.

I hate to break it down to those celebrating this as a "win" for American workers. Cisco, and every other big company, have outsourced engineering jobs for years. They all have massive offices in India, China, Mexico, etc. Most of the new jobs are available there and not in the US. This new mandate does NOTHING for American workers; it will simply make these companies move the engineering jobs there. If the administration really wanted to help American workers (and not just reduce immigrants and help millionaires) then the policy should be to force these companies have their software developed in the US (or at least a certain percentage), and create high paying jobs for Americans, not cr-ppy manufacturing jobs that nobody wants to do.

I wish all you guys well and hope you get it sorted out.

Well qualified H1-B students will definitely find jobs. There are so many non-tech H1-B jobs.

Tech jobs…. Hire Americans first. I am against who abuse the H1-B visa and hiring bias by many Indian IT outsourcing companies.

Many naturalized citizens and green card holders agree that current H1-B visa system and hiring is not fair. Indian outsourcing companies are taking over H1-B visas which are meant for American companies. They are using business visa and importing engineers to work for months. How did USA let this happen ?

They should be given first opportunities for jobs and they are well qualified.

Can you imagine Americans and Indians taking over jobs in China? Or
Americans and Chinese taking over thousands of jobs in India ?

Indian H1Bs contributed an unfathomable amount to America: 100s of billions in taxes, 10s of billions more in fees, trillions in services. Among the most peaceful, intelligent, interesting people to grace our shores. And what do we give back? Demonization & discrimination...

SUMMARY OF H-1B EXECUTIVE ORDER

  • ENTRY BAN: No H-1B visa holder may enter the United States beginning Sunday September 21st, including current visa holders, unles they pay $100K to enter.

  • VISA FEE: New H-1B and H-1B extensions must pay 100K to be processed and 100K per year every year thereafter to maintain them.

This will effectively end the H-1B program completely. No one, even the highest paid at 500K will be paying an extra 100K a year to the government.

It will destroy the health care, higher education, and technology sectors as we know them if this isn't struck down in court.

trump made it so companies pay $100k for h1bs.
do you think corporate america is instantly going to grow a conscience and want to mass hire us employees?

corporations always trying to find loopholes in laws to maximize profits and exploit workers.

trump going to make some $$$ with all these h1b requests, or there will be a push to offshore more work is my guess. what do you guys think?

hoping the best for us workers, especially right now. it is a hellscape out there if you are unemployed trying to find work in tech.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters on a call Friday evening that the administration came to the fee of $100,000 per year, plus vetting costs, after talking with companies.

He noted that the payment structure is still under discussion with the Department of Homeland Security, in terms of “whether we’re going to charge the $300,000 up front or $100,000 a year for the three years.”

Target on India, China outsourcing:

The HIRE Act
The proposed HIRE Act would include the following provisions:
25% excise tax: A tax of 25% would be levied on any payment made by a U.S. company to a foreign person for labor or services, if those services ultimately benefit U.S.-based consumers. The tax is set to apply to payments made after December 31, 2025.
No tax deduction: These outsourcing payments would no longer be tax-deductible as business expenses, doubling the financial impact on companies that outsource jobs.

A few predictions due to the new $100K H1B application fee / renewal executive order that will be signed tomorrow:

1) While it's illegal to layoff employees for work status, I predict that many companies will start mass layoffs in Q4 (many of them affecting H1Bs) to reduce opex costs due to the costs of work visa sponsorship.

2) All new job listings will have "cannot sponsor work authorization / transfer."

3) Offshore hiring will be accelerated.

People, do your homework instead of freaking out.

People who already have a valid H-1B status (i.e. approved, working, under a petition that is active) t does not appear that current valid H-1B status would be immediately cancelled just by this rule. Usually, these kinds of changes apply going forward (new petitions, renewals, etc.). The sources indicate: “for current H-1B holders, the proclamation does not immediately affect existing visas, but future extensions, transfers, or renewals could be subject to the new rules.
