Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

A friend wanted to apply

I told him to run and never look back. Gave him the full rundown on what’s going on here. I am not sure if he'll listen since he seemed a bit skeptical, but I did my part. I wouldn't wish this place on anyone I care about.

@b3

"red chair photo" made me laugh. Yeah there is some serious glue sniffing going on with those people.

20 years at VZ, left in 2024, took the sev package, never looked back. OK, maybe once or twice, but far happier now.

Hans, you are the worst CEO of the Fortune 50

That said, much of the current mid-level leadership—director level and above—while diligent and intelligent, are often green around the ears when it comes to real operational or strategic experience. This lack of depth shows up in the disconnect between planning and execution across many areas. If you need a glimpse into the culture, browse some of the leadership posts on LinkedIn—you’ll quickly grasp the performative tone and underlying hollowness. Still, if you land on the right team, I’d recommend joining. Verizon can still offer meaningful experience—just don’t expect the chain of command to lead the way.

I want to weigh in on this post. For a young adult just starting their Career- Verizon would be a great resume builder. Outstanding brand Name recognition, good reputation (still I think), good benefits and great training. There are no perfect companies - those days are long gone. If I were this person, apply - stay for a year - if you like it great. If not - move on. Hopefully in a year or so- the job market will be better. I’ve been with this

company for 13 years and some days are good, some not. This is not unique to Verizon.

Just because Hans and the current executive team have been among the weakest in Verizon’s history doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t apply. There are still solid teams doing good work, and in the right department, you can gain valuable experience, a strong brand on your résumé, and decent short-term stability. Leadership at the top may be directionless, but that doesn’t define every team on the ground. Go in clear-eyed, not discouraged.

@OP

If your friend is looking for short-term employment, a recognizable name on their résumé, or exposure to a large-scale corporate environment, Verizon may offer that. There are still teams doing meaningful work, and certain roles provide stability and decent compensation.

However, if they’re expecting long-term career growth, innovation-driven culture, or responsive leadership, they may be disappointed. Ongoing restructuring, leadership turnover, and shifting priorities have created uncertainty in many departments. Internal communication can be inconsistent, and morale varies widely across teams.

In short: proceed with eyes open. It’s not universally bad, but it’s not what it used to be — and not every department is equal.

Speaking as someone who put in 30+, there were years I hated the job. Bad bosses and some coworkers who were lazy, forced to work a shift I didn’t want, suspended for some bs. But who doesn’t complain about their job? Now I look back and think it wasn’t that bad. The work was easy, I got paid well, and I earned a decent retirement. Along the way a met a lot of good people and I have some good memories. I thank god we had a union, working without it would have been much tougher. Say what you will about the union, but you would not make as much or have the benefit elsewhere.

Well, you did your friend a disservice. So what of YOUR OPINION around here.

At a minimum, he gets actual interviewing experience. At most, he lands the job with a good boss and benefits.
