Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

JD meant we asked for this

JD’s comment during the call today did sound that the reorg is the result of our feedback he’s got from us during his first 100 days on boarding - “you guys constantly asked to simplify the process!!”. During last several years we tried to let those sr and vp understand their continuous attempt to expand their org is NOT helping us to operate effectively but unfortunately our voices were not heard much. Now they say we cut the number of jobs because they finally listen to our opinion to simplify the process. We will see the result of the first phase by end of July but We would be outrageous if those who tried to build their own empires survive while their team members get let go.

"...too many people who do not do a thing yet always want updates on what others are doing."

Quote of the decade (aka sabbatical)

@dykn
Things have gotten bad, really bad, at Nike. I have never seen such lack of respect and common courtesy between people at an organization. To make things worse, there is complete lack of accountability too. People blatantly fail to deliver yet the first thing other do is make excuses for them. One of the things that I truly despise is how almost everyone has an opinion about "a problem" yet almost no one has the wisdom to propose an idea or come up with a recommendation. Finally, there are too many people who do not do a thing yet always want updates on what others are doing. GSM and especially manufacturing is the prime example of functions full of talking-heads. Sad!

Yes. I feel lucky that I started at Nike in the last couple of "good years" before it just became an obvious money grab for the folks at the top. Things used to actually trickle down to the "little guys" in the form of benefits and perks. Now there's little reason to go all in and you basically have to always have one foot out the door.

Those teams could be cut at least in half and no one would not notice. They don’t do any of the work. They just take credit for and talk about it.

Good question, @avhx. It would help if both sustainability and purpose get well-defined and are actionable instead of a conceptual buzz-words.

@aueu right, quarter of the VPs and I would add just as many Sr. Directors and Directors too. Categories will be impacted most. Some stressful couple of month ahead.

Reorg will finally cut the bloat. A quarter of VPs followed by lower level bands. Wholesale (obvs) and sales. Lawd help us all.

Completely agree with @8swz. I think it is absolutely insane that we have VPs reporting to other VPs, Sr. Directors reporting to other Sr. Directors and, guess what, yep, Directors reporting to other Directors!!!!!!!

Hopefully JD realizes that what “the people asked for” was fewer layers (VPs and Sr Directors), and not fewer worker bees.

@1bvn+15JspdGn - Keep in mind that (at least in product creation) most of the actual work-work is done by L, U, and E bands.. remove them, and the company will have nothing to sell, which could make hitting $50b a slight challenge. If JD is truly trying to flatten the organization, they should be focusing their efforts on E, S and beyond. They are the decision makers slowing down the machine...

All the best to you all.

@OP+15JspdGn good observation. Less silos, flatter organization, deconstructing the complex matrix create over so many years is the right thing to do. JD is aware of this and he sees it. Personally, I think only few - less than 5 - total VPs and Sr. Directors will end up leaving. The rest, I am afraid, will be mostly U and E band employees. We have not heard how many employees or what percent of the workforce will be sacrificed; I am thinking 15% - 20%. I hope for less though - much less.
