Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

All the people they hired in NY circa 1999, 2000, and 2001 is the reason the company hates the union.

Remember the squeegee guys on every corner?

How about the ‘let me hold a dollar’ guys?

Maybe you remember the mommas with 8 kids living off Uncle Sam?

Don’t forget the morbidly obese guy who doesn’t seem to own a shirt waiting for Mr Softee everyday!

That’s what was hired in NY and what we are stuck with. The federal government and NY State made a deal with Bell Atlantic to lower their standards in hiring and this is what we got. Most will be leaving the company in the next few years. I would say it was a nice career but the majority took disability every opportunity they could. Clean house in Brooklyn!

@bd anything we can do to bust the union. RTO will certainly get it done. Afterwards then Replace techs.

@ap that has changed.read the fine print due to this event
In the fourth quarter of 2023, Verizon announced a $5.8 billion write-down of its Business unit, primarily due to the declining value of its wireline business.
Reason why they no longer can just extend current terms . An extension won't happen this time around . Union can't walk. The will be so tough bargaining this time around.
Good luck to all .

@at although numerous, your given reason is not one of the many reasons that L.M. was, is, and forever will be, despised by many - even outside his immediate family, IMO.

Office workers can be outsourced, but way off on the 2nd part. Clueless contractors have no chance. Just toss someone out to do FIOS? Yeah... That'll go just swell. even copper is impossible when if you have less than 2 years in a particular county. They'd be as clueless are you are when you post utter nothingness.

The company holds all the cards. All calls can be outsourced. There’s a lot of vendors to do tech work. Em0loyees should be happy with whatever they get. And WFH, made this all possible. Thanks entitled call center representatives!!

The layoff happened under Seidenberg.

And that layoff is why the union hates the company. All unnecessary Drama from our friend Lowell.

Also there was a layoff but the union sued and they were rehired.

I am flabbergasted that precisely NONE of these hires were laid off in the ensuing dot-com bust. Management, union, non-union shills are all still here 😭
