Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Job searching has made me even more depressed

I’ve been looking for something else for months now. My resume is solid, and my skills are up to date. I wanted to get ahead of T’s relentless job cuts. So far, I’ve landed only two interviews. One job offer was such a joke that I didn’t even consider it. I really, really hope it’s just me - bad luck or my particular skillset not being in demand right now. If it’s not, then we’re sc--wed.

The job market is still good if you have critical and relevant skills.

Telecom is over - 5G what? 6G? Even the hedge funds of WS see it’s all commodity. When was the last time Bell Labs developed a market ready product. When the SBC cancer set in all innovation ended. It was like giving your teenage son the keys to your corvette - yup thanks fast Eddie, favorite son in law RJS and Uncle Stink. You totaled it!

@cy

What difference does that make?

The tragic irony of it all is that manual labor will be the last jobs standing. We all envisioned a world where menial tasks would be automated to make more time for intellectual pursuits, but it appears the reality is the intellectual pursuits are easier to replace with AI.

P1$$ on telecom. Seek a gig outside of this industry.

Same, I've been searching too for months and nothing. I got more hits/interview back in Jan than now, just nothing. I use AI to tailor my resume per suggestion, and a cover letter, still nothing. I dont even care if its a contract or seasonal at this point. I just want a new environment.

Craft doesnt matter. I was craft for 20+ years. Once they cut down a "core office" that ISNT Dallas, you're going to get cut.

Speaking as one with experience with 50 other craft from San Ramon that was cut this Summer.

Reading these posts are very sobering and, I don't mean to sound like I'm gloating, but I'm very thankful I chose to stay craft all these years.

What difference does that make? I don’t know exactly what you do but the only reason AI hasn’t taken your job is either. It doesn’t have hands so it can’t be a field tech or we don’t have a sufficient processing power (yet) to eliminate all the call center jobs.

OP is living the reality of not having an in-demand skillset

Reading these posts are very sobering and, I don't mean to sound like I'm gloating, but I'm very thankful I chose to stay craft all these years. I've had plenty of opportunities to take a management position for a lot more money than I'm currently earning but "more money" never seemed worth the additional stress and aggravation and office games that are played. Best wishes to all those affected these last several years. At&T is an evil empire and Stankey is a soulless Kaunt.

It’s not you at all. I’ve applied for so many jobs m, even entry-level positions that I’m overqualified for, and I haven’t gotten one single call. A friend of mine applied for 300 jobs before she finally landed one. Regardless, I’m still putting in my two weeks notice at the end of the month.

@ba "Your age is inferred by job history."

Only list the last 10 years or so of your work history. Anything older than that won't be relevant anyway.
But yeah. Job market is truly difficult right now.

Even job coaches (people paid to help you find a job) tell you this is a bad time to job hunt. The private sector has not netted any new jobs in several years. Now, we have uncertainty about tariffs, corporate tax rates, and AI. The first 2 will hopefully be resolved this summer. That should help the market. The question is what effect will AI have in the short run.

It’s not you. It’s the entire tech space right now. I’ve got a similar story to the OP, solid resume, solid skills and results, 2 interviews in 6 months. Thats pretty good in this market. So many people in tech have been laid off the past year the market is flooded. I’ve got friend that got laid off from other companies that have been unemployed for over a year. All of them developers with CS degrees. Just go read your LinkedIn feed, it’s depressing.

Despite possessing over 23 years of progressive experience in technical roles, a Master’s degree in Computer Science, and two industry-recognized certifications, I have been actively seeking employment opportunities for more than nine months without securing even a single interview. This prolonged and unexpected job search, despite a robust professional background and advanced academic credentials, has been both disheartening and perplexing.

It is very hard getting interviews for Full stack devs at this time. You are lucky if you got 2 and they are full stack devs

Most companies are still filtering out race and age for job applicants. They explicitly as your race and whether you are Caucasian or not. Your age is inferred by job history. They also want superman, a super coding VP. Just lie. Trust me, they’re too stupid to know what they want and need, just like this warped and communist run company.

The best option is to remove AT&T from your resume entirely and explain you took a break and are wanting to get back into the work force. A listing of AT&T is a red flag for most telc recruiters.

Is AT&T listed on your resume? That is a huge red flag to overcome when your resume is being reviewed. T does not have a good reputation in the industry.
