Db2, COBOL, CICS were offering stability but modernization to Cassandra and Order rewire is a complete flop show . Cassandra is the biggest headache I would say.
Look at the companies like JP Morgan , Bank of America and big banks where they are still using Mainframes .

All the legacy systems (optix, vrepair, ssp, sop) are still on mainframe.

@ak Mainframes will always be running in businesses like VZ. They process large amounts of data in a short period of time. Long live the mainframe!
The main reason of using Cassandra was to make the power point flashy, GTS didn't spend enough time to understand it nor allowing true engineers to speak the truth about it toward the business use case.
to make this worse, other teams/group blindly copied the move.

Cassandra is a good product by itself, but within VZ IT SRE, it was blindly deployed across all use cases without adequately considering factors such as data synchronization volume, read/write throughput, and data access patterns.
This resulted in the data synchronization (recon) job running 24x7 and still being unable to catch up with the current data. The resulting delay—sometimes up to 10 minutes—created thousands of IT tickets from retail stores and call centers for data discrepancy.
In addition, VZ SRE periodically adjusts the IOPS based on AWS cost pressures. Reducing IOPS further degrades read/write performance, exacerbating the synchronization backlog and resulting in additional operational issues.
Banks know where to spend the money, and where not too. Too expensive to move off mainframes, so they don't. And they don't need speed nor fast whizbang responses times..... having said that, GTS has made a mess of everything with bits and pieces of new tech, all patched to work with each other. Well, those that did it are now gone...
