Thread regarding Optum layoffs

I don't get it

Every time there's a layoff, they let go of the people who've been around the longest and know the most. The ones who can solve problems in five minutes that take new people five days. Then a few months later they realize the work isn't getting done anymore. So they hire two or three people to try to do what that one person used to do. How is that good for business?

That’s because they are the higher earners. They don’t care. I can’t wait until things blow up because they didn’t think through things. At another company I worked at the let IT go for India . We couldn’t get anything done out of them for years. Things like reports came to a screeching halt because india didn’t know how to make changes. The company had to hire IT back. This was a very large company also. Things in other areas got sc--wed up. People onshore had to take on the work doing double and triple work in Finance! Hahaha let them sink these managers and above are so young and inexperienced I can’t wait until things blow up!

@b2 It’s only about share except when it comes to managers, directors, VPs. Very top heavy and these ones aren’t getting laid off yet they aren’t the ones doing the actual work. Also bullies. Employees and leadership who are bullies definitely stay even if they are making tons of work and do nothing.

It's mostly about salary. Has nothing to do with talent or experience. Finance is the group dictating that X number of people need to be cut to save a certain amount of money. Your highest paid people (middle managers and front line people) are the target because finance isn't considering the value of their knowledge and experience, cost to replace someone or future savings because of having people who know what they are doing.

@aj They do know more. What I’m saying is they are narcissistic people and think you may take their jobs. Yes, most people in managerial roles here have fragile little egos.

@a2 perceive or actually DO know more? What a fragile little ego. It shows.

This is highly dependent on where you are in the company. I've seen both people let go who also genuinely did not do much and people let go who did better than their replacement.

They don’t like free thinkers and those they perceive “know more than them”

@OP Yes, very bad. It’s a game of bullies protecting bullies and Yes-people. Thats why! Also at UHG, your direct manager puts you on the layoff list, which is very bad. Then they lie that they had nothing to do with it, it came from above, blah blah. This needs to change as there are potential legal liabilities. As many bullies as we’ve heard of here given power to lay off the people they are bullying . Red flag! 🚩
