Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Congrats Springfield

Springfield just voted to unionize with USW.

Congratulations to everyone there, I hope the other non-union plants soon follow suit.

I saw first hand that 3M HR met every year with the key employers in the area/city our plant was in to coordinate wages and benefits. The purpose of the off the books meeting was to keep the prevailing wages "controlled" and prevent one employer from poaching trained workers. It felt very inappropriate to me. Area employers are "organized" to keep labor costs down, but God forbid that the workers organize.

No union can stop a plant from closing. Otherwise this country would still be making everything instead of China. There's no profit when your price of goods reflects union labor. So get some 3rd worlder to make it for pennies an hour. People want big union wages but shop at non-union places like Walmart to save money.

Union is it's own worst enemy when they get their entitlement mentality.

@k3 - "Say, didn't those union people keep their jobs while the non-union and salaried workers got laid off?"

Tell that to your USW brothers and sisters of Local 11-505 in Fairmont, MN where the plant will be closing at the end of this year. The union also didn't save the jobs of its' 350 members who made abrasives and tape in St. Paul, MN or their members at any of the other union represented plants that 3M has closed over the years.

3M Non-Union Millwright in Eden Prairie was making $35 an hour.
3M Union Millwright at Cottage Grove was making $46 an hour.
3m Non-Union Pipefitter at Hutchinson was making $37.50 an hour.
3M Union Pipefitter at 3M Center was making $47.00 an hour.
And those non-union jobs are now gone. They have been replaced by JLL/CBRE.
Don't believe the Trolls and Bots.

What unions do succeed at is protecting workers with the most seniority. That probably didn't matter much in the old days. But given what has happened to many people just short of qualifying for a full pension (age 55) - numerous people posted here who were terminated merely months before age 55. Those workers approaching 55 can breathe a sigh of relief.

With unions everyone suffers collectively. Non unions everyone suffers individually.

Your first contract will be good, then the decline comes. Your wages will be 80% of a non union worker in 5 years. Your contract will hold you with %s that sound good, but they won’t keep up with the regular hourly folks. There can and still will be reductions. Unions don’t stop that, they just make more words out of it before pulling the trigger. Your hiring freeze comes first as well. Good luck to ya. Haha!

@aj having worked at a 3M Union plant and non-union plant I can say wages at the non-plant are higher. Plus Union plant benefits were different (ie only 60% pay for short term disability)

Dues are a pretty nominal fee to pay for more money on your paycheck. Most of The Game is rigged against both union and non-union, however, people get paid more money at 3M in a union shop vs people doing the same job in a 3M non-union shop. You take the money and run. Sh*t talk unions all you want, but if you want more money, go union.

Definitely need more sites to unionize now that BB has shown he couldn't care less about anyone but his cronies.

3M can still layoff people but must follow the contract and seniority rules. No more of BBs favorite method of laying off people just before age 55 to sc--w them out of a better pension. Those people will have good seniority.

The vote was 232 to 99. Quite a buttkicking for the yacht man to stomach on a chilly Monday. Should have just stayed in Florida BB.

USW = Union Scrèwing Workers. Watch as they bleed money from your paychecks and then try to figure out what's in it for the workers.
