@OP of course is not simple. I know of ex coworkers that were layoff 4 years ago and still didn’t find any job.

Back in the day when I first hired on I tested and did very well. Called in to find out the status of a job offer. Lady I talked to was probably too honest. I was told they had met their quota for my specific racial qualities. She was nice enough to tell me that when they opened up that hiring I would be one of the first in line since I had tested so well.
I always thought my Word and Excel skills were in higher demand.
When you don't have much skills and can't get hired, complain about H1B Visa. That always works.
Laundry list of job requirements so that hiring managers can tailor to H1b candidates or to process green cards for existing)1bs. Age discrimination.
If hiring manager is Indian then add caste and language discrimination.

You take any support for DEI as a full throated beat up on whites. It’s not. But it is an acknowledgement that most “others” have never had a level playing field. You never complained about that injustice, did you?
I get that you don’t believe in these injustices but you also were never limited by your demographic profile. Said another way, without some DEI-like consideration, merit doesn’t consistently get applied to the “others” but I’m guessing you’re OK with that.
Regarding merit, you’re dreaming if you think capitalist driven corporations and economies are not largely promoters of merit. And just because YOU scream DEI, doesn’t mean you had the merit to progress.
DEI does blame others. Why else is MERIT removed from the equation and the focus zeroed in on skin color. Anyone that says different was never had their job pried out from their fingers.

You know that Trump’s first term started the crazy spending (due to pandemic) to avoid bigger issues which most reasonable people supported - but that was OK cause it was Trump, correct?
Yes, that’s continued under Biden’s policies for the same reason (and he did inherit the momentum) - but that was bad cause it was Biden.
The deficit and debt are increasing now (and inflation is too) and will further increase the wealth gap and will not help you regardless what you think - but that’s OK cause it is Trump.

Market is the worst it’s been in decades. For white collar jobs, probably worst market ever. Everyone is laying off. If I could find something else or better, then I wouldn’t be here. It’s not a skills gap, I’ve been steady upskilling. The problem is there aren’t any jobs. Why that is? Culmination of things, offshoring, inshoring, automation, AI, d-mb executives. The later being the bigger cause. AI isn’t there yet though that’s the excuse, automation (we’ve been doing that forever). The reality is they want to do more with less and less and less. We’re at the broken camels back stage. Everyone wearing multiple hats and working more than ever. Not just here, but everywhere. We’re expected to be on 24/7/365. We work more than anywhere.

Spot on. The tech job market is in the gutter thanks to mass in-sourcing, out-sourcing & DEI quotas (that “pull rank” on legit merit). I don’t believe it will improve any time soon…or at all. Hard times are here to stay for the average American(s).
