Thread regarding Ford layoffs

I like working at Ford

I said it before and I'll say it again. There's so much hate here, but I'm sure at least some others feel the same way I do. I mean, if you hate your job, then why are you so worried about layoffs? I am because I want to stay here. But why do you if you hate it here so much?

Exactly! That's the attitude. Behind closed doors, your name is smeared so you can’t prove Ford wrong by thriving elsewhere. Managers are trained to punish you under "too ambitious", "not a team player", "need more humility". You aren’t allowed to outgrow your seniors. If you start threatening with visibility, they'll kneecap you for getting in the way of their "good thing".

The system relies on double binds: work harder but stop being so ambitious, be a leader but don’t step on toes, own your work but share the credit. Every move is wrong by design, so they can control you.

The much-touted “Open Door” and “Speak Up” programs are intelligence gathering, not protection. It’s how they identify troublemakers early and line up their stories before anything can escalate.

They will announce promotions, but in reality they were never processed, literally a joke baked into HR’s system. You'll tell your family at a dinner, they tell their own friends all proud, only to hear their son is being hazed secretly for real merit at a young age at Ford. Real abuse. That isn’t miscommunication. That’s cruelty institutionalized.

I generally like working here. However, when I received a pre-approval from my manager to wfh due to a sudden family illness, and then get the nasty gram from HR because I wasn't in the office 3 days a week, that really blows my bubble.

You start worrying when your collegues disapear and one day you get a private call with a new LL4 telling you that your position is eliminated. It is not your position is eliminated its some new cows decides so. You worked there many years and somebody new decides you are not a fit , while your worked your but off to replace 5 people....

You start worrying when you pay attention to other org , you must be small and naive and no cross department relationships. Then you post it here and trying to prove something.

My experience at Ford is....you might be feel okay for a while, but sooner or later it will feel like a disaster for you. Whether it's a new People leader, new organization, or whatever else. The he-l will catch up with you at Ford!

I also like being here!

However, the strict RTO requirement has made me feel bitter. I am stuck commuting for no reason other than a badge swipe and ensure it doesn't impact my EOY review or bonus.

@ah I saw the real Ford as an FCG! The ones in the leadership ranks are not good people! Scary stuff. Internship was okay, salaried was a bait and switch. I didn't know Ford scammed.

I kind agree with OP. I worked at Ford for almost 20 years. Most of the time, I just do my work and was pretty happy. I was ready to retire from Ford. Until I was put in an id--t’ section. He made everyone’s life miserable. I was laid off. But fortunately, I was able to find a good job in competitor cross town with better pay. Keep your skill up to date. You can always find another place which appreciates your work.

@ah Hey, if someone got lucky with a good rotation, they should choose the possibility of holding off on any future rotations, especially given how risky the current climate is. If their experience is genuinely positive, they deserve more control rather than being forced into a rotation indefinitely, out of their control, where they feel trapped and can’t escape. Sometimes it feels like people lock the door behind you and pull up the ladder, leaving you stuck in a room with no way to make the situation better or get out.

That said, I feel like OP might be trolling with that oversimplified comment, “If you hate your job, then why are you so worried about layoffs?”. As if people actually get to just pick whether they love or hate their job. Most people want to make the best of their situation but often end up disappointed by circumstances beyond their control.

I think you like Ford since you are an FCG. You haven’t been here long enough to see the real Ford. You haven’t experienced someone receiving credit for your work, being passed over for a promotion over politics, having a bad boss, etc.

Relax, man. Feels like you might be LARPing as @d2, @f9, and @c9 too. It was just a joke thread. No need to run damage control on satire!

@OP Good for you! I am now wondering if you are part of the FnF club, those who do nothing but receive all rewards, or just a very lucky regular employee.

I liked working at Ford. It was interesting, I had certain freedom in my projects, and people were happy then. Sure, there were some grumpy people around, others that were hiding and waiting for retirement and the occasional backstabbing S-B.

Now most people I know are upset with RTO, layoffs, bad management decisions, awful executive decisions, reorgs and the ever expanding backstabbing S-B mob. For the last few years I have been assigned more responsibilities because those who had them in my team were laid off. So my salary has not kept up with inflation (like most Americans), my stress load exploded, my concerns about the future of the company and my position in it went up exponentially, and I no longer have the freedom I used to have.

So why am I still here? Mainly money, old age and the remains of freedom. I don't regret coming to Ford, but I do regret the turn for the worse that happened in this company. It makes me sad seeing an American icon turned to dust because Bill Ford is so incompetent and "liberal".

What's not to hate... Lack of work, RTO to a sh---y building full of mold, "human capital management", no mission, abhorrent management decisions, DF, H-1B's laughing at the white people, back to being treated like a child... Yeah, great place to work. I'm here for the pay. They've beaten the pride and morale out of me. It'll be a nice vacation when my number gets picked.
