New collab

I agree 10000% with this response to a post on LinkedIn to the Nike/Skims collab. Where amongst other things the post mentioned in was a year in the making (which I get) but a decision that was made before EH came on board and should be have been re-analyzed as to whether it’s on message with EH’s vision or more of what’s not working.. Maybe someone can help me understand the pro to the collab 🤷🏼‍♂️

Response:
I watched one of the world's most iconic sports brands — Nike — make a move I never thought I’d see: teaming up with SKIMS, a brand synonymous with Kim Kardashian. This collaboration is said to "disrupt the global fitness and activewear industry." But is it the kind of disruption Nike's legacy was built on?

Nike has always represented the pinnacle of athletic excellence, innovation, and performance. It was a brand that athletes, fans, and fitness enthusiasts looked up to. Now, they’re leaning on celebrity clout rather than the raw performance and dedication that used to define their gear. Kim Kardashian may bring visibility, but is this the kind of visibility that aligns with Nike's core identity?

In times of crisis, we all make moves. But seeing Nike, once a beacon of athleticism, walk down this path feels like a step away from their heritage. It’s a shame to witness. Excited to see where they scatter to next!

AM is a disaster. Part of the HON club, she's a grinding machine executive who's never left Beaverton or had a inventive idea in career. I used to report to her!

The Women’s VP/GM doesn’t even where Nike or Jordan or converse
Wears flats every day and dresses like a banker
No wonder women’s is losing

I’ll start buying into the “Nike doesn’t care about Womens” when they ditch the LT that’s been driving the strategies for 20 years and try a fresh approach. Let’s see if that works. It’s not Nike doesn’t care about Women….it’s the Women in charge of the POV going into the market place that’s lacking. It’s been the SAME team. Year after year they collect their giant bonuses as the women’s business flounders. The amount of resources for this business at Nike is staggering….where those resources are pointing is the problem and has been for years.

Women’s apparel has been cr-p for years. It’s like product and design are the rejects of lulu, Alo. Behind trends, behind on materials and color. Women’s should be disbanded

Nike can do more than one thing at a time. Skimms is one of those things. As long as a renewed focus on serving the athlete with product innovation across categories is also strengthened and accompanied by a return to proper marketing, I see Skimms as potentially additive rather than something that’s “bad”.

Of course it remains to be seen if Nike can return to its old innovation/marketing pipeline. I do see glimmers of hope with products like the Vomero 18. We know Nike can do what it needs to do. The question is, will it?

Sad to see this iconic brand relying on a po-nstar who got famous for her s-x tape. This downfall is tragic.

@e0+1jmfq2wdp What do you mean? We still have HON in the helm with her mer merit based leadership grounded in 40+ years of solid experience as a shopper as she one boldly brought up in women's LT

The old girls club is still rolling strong

The entire Nike Women leadership team should be replaced. They couldn’t create and market appealing products or connect with female consumers in a meaningful way, so they throw in the towel and take the easy way out, partnering with skims which has no common values with Nike. Just a clear money grab attempt. What a disgrace. This company is a hallow shell of its former self.

It feels like there are so many easy wins we could make in women’s - petite/tall sizing, sports bras for women that actually perform, fabrics that are at least as good as what the men get. I think our competitors are willing to actually spend money on (higher) quality fabric, and that makes all the difference. (Don’t get me started on the horrendous legend tees.) It’s no longer enough to scrimp on fabric and quality, slap a swoosh on the chest, and charge a premium price. Women’s feels like an afterthought that leadership pays lip service to, but there is SO MUCH money we’re leaving on the table here.

Absolutely agree with the post that Nike Women’s is waving the white flag with this collab. At what point will that team be held accountable for their terrible results instead of being promoted and rotated about because of their alumni status in the women’s org. There are a handful of leaders who have been in charge for over a decade with nothing to show for it. KK figured it out it a matter of months.

Most employees are needlessly bitter and negative on employee surveys.

I view this partnership (to be clear it isn't a collab, different than working with Supreme, Jacquemus, LV, etc.; it is creating an entirely shared new brand) as a long-term net positive but a brutal short-term admittance than Nike can't win in Women's Apparel on it's own two feet. We essentially waved the white flag that we were too weak to make a comeback on our own from getting our butts handed to us by smaller brands Lulu, Alo, Vuori, Beyond, etc. Nike was hemorrhaging marketshare to these competitors, and we needed a spark.
I do think there are mutual gains for both companies to leverage skillset and knowledge. I also think this might be a test run before acquisition. Skims has a $4B market cap with unprecedented growth. My guess is similar to Kylie selling her cosmetics brand, Kim wouldn't mind cashing out soon, and, with that type of valuation, only a handful of companies make sense, Nike being on the short list. Expand share of closet into a category (underwear/intimates) that Nike has dabbled in with minimal success.
Kudos to Skims for crushing it in a relatively short timeframe. Hopefully their leadership can takes the seats of the incompetent Nike leaders in Women when acquired.

SKIMS is already partnered with NBA, WNBA and USA Basketball since last fall, including SKIMS Mens Campaign featuring NBA star, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and most recently the SKIMS March All-Stars campaign featuring leading college basketball players.
Don’t see the issue and look forward to seeing what they can do together.

EH- How about oh, I don’t know using your actual employees as a focus group, getting a pulse check, run an employee survey, for things like this? There’s more than enough of us that will give you pretty accurate statistics for the average consumer. We are also consumers after all… Wow, could you all imagine, now that is employee engagement and collaboration right there! But… Alas we are not employee owned so what we think doesn’t matter I guess, :( but I’m sure a ton of us have Nike’s best interest at heart.

Does this collab go along with EH’s vision of being more premium/exclusive? I just wish we could have done that without a Kardashian. But maybe I’m in the minority here and a lot of our demographic are into the extreme celebrity/vanity obsessed Kardashian thing. I didn’t think our focus was anywhere near trying to reach that base, but maybe? Yeah.. No, I don’t get it.. I want the best for Nike but real question, how many people/focus groups do they run these things by?

It’s clear Nike no longer knows what it stands for - this proves it’s having a complete identity crisis. A company is a live incarnation of its leadership, and this shows just how confused our senior leaders are.
