Taking Medication To Cope

Has anyone else had the experience of just not being able to cope with the persistent concerns of both not being able to keep up, plus the feeling that their own impending notice is a forgone conclusion, just waiting to happen?

Several months ago, I had so much anxiety, over my VP having an ongoing conniption fit over the set of metrics my team produced, not "aligning" to the "strategic message" being tried to "crafted", for an "incredibly important executive meeting"; that I worked myself up into such a panic, that I got in an automobile accident. I'm not saying the accident was 100% due to my state of paranoid stupidity at the time, but it was a major contributing factor.

My spouse ordered me to go to the doctor, and I broke down on how much of a mess I was psychologically. My spouse explained to the doctor, on how I was a completely different person than I was years ago. We went over life's issues, and framed out how I got here; and surprise, one of the biggest root cause issues was deemed to be my ongoing fear of being restructured.

The doctor placed me on several medications, several for anxiety, and several because since working my behind off for the past few years, my behind has grown to twice its original pre-Cisco size, due to a healthy diet of carbs and sugary Starbucks drinks.

I've been on these meds for several months, and am loosing weight. I feel much better, but to be completely honest; I know longer give a crud about this place. I don't like the people I work with, I really do not like my leadership. I don't know why I believed for a long time, that this was a fantastic place to work. It su-ks.

We have talked it over, and am going to try to stay as long as I can. It is refreshing to not care. Yes, I will do the work, be expect the bare minimum.

Sad because this company is being ruined by the greed of a small population of enabled executives, who just don't care to slice of whatever population of employees are needed to make their pockets fill up even faster, for the sake of the AI evolution.

If you don't like the message above, well aren't you just living with your head in the sand. Hopefully our paths won't cross, because I don't want to work with you, or worst, for you.

You mean attending Pavelka's k-m-ba-yah sessions didn't melt the stress of the constant threats against your personal security? lol

All joking aside though, I was impacted in this round of layoffs.

I've met people who grew up in war zones, and other people who fought in combat. I take inspiration from those people, because they know how to be surrounded by REAL danger, yet keep moving and keep making progress. They know how to survive with nothing. Would they be afraid of a layoff? No. There are worse things, much worse things.

Perspective is everything.

I hear you, OP. You\re not alone. I didn't end up with medications, but all this affected my life and mental health, considerably. The real problem with it is, that once you're affected, you know what you need to do, but you don't have energy or willpower to do it. Good thing is that you have a supportive spouse who cares about you and your well being.
I wish you and hope you'll find your way out of this and be happy again.

Yeah I was here, had the sunday scaries all through shut down, so when we came back, I quit. You do have a choice. You don't have to live like this. I think if more people made these changes, that's the only way the problem will eventually get called out. Figure out your runway, what you need to sacrifice, and make a decision. Letting life steam roll you isn't the answer.

@a6 Sorry if that came across as being the victim, not playing victim card. I'm the Go-To-Market Product; and the Product itself is indeed a turning into a load of Woe and Pitty that does not perform per the specifications. Then again, many of Cisco's Product releases are garbage. Time to punt. Thanks for everyone's responses. Yes, time to GTFO. To those staying, good luck, and remember to be awesome caring nurtures you are. What a team!

The Orwellian responses to this thread are completely indicative to why this company is so dysfunctional, top to bottom. We all get what we deserve, and what we collectively deserve; is not much. Most of the effort we put in will go into someone else's pocket way up the chain. Rats are the first to leave sinking ships, I guess I'm that rat. Adios, tu-ds.

@OP this is what happens when youre a good little worker bee sacrificing your life to make someone else rich. I suggest you start doing less and less work and see how much you can get away with. Ive quiet quit for the last 4 years doing 20 hours a week of work and ive just got 2 10% raises back to back the last 2 quarters.

The company wants to get the most out of your for the least money. Your job is to do the least amount of work for the most money, and if they dont give you more money, find a new job instead of putting in extra hours which they will 100% abuse and pay you peanuts for

If you wanna play a victim then go back to reddit and farm some karma there with the other fat re--rds

@op honest advice…..
The bare minimum works until the company realizes and takes action !

Do not sit around waiting to be fired. Find a job that fits you better, then resign with dignity.

There are so many careers, and not everyone needs to or should be in tech.

If a job is affecting your health, your family, your confidence, and your ability to function, that is a very clear sign to pause and rethink the path. Staying in an environment you resent while doing the bare minimum is not freedom. It is still letting the company control your life, and the road from here is only going to get worse.

The better move is to step back, identify what you are actually good at, and look for opportunities where those strengths are valued. Tech is not the only path to stability, purpose, or success.

Why not address the root cause of your anxiety (it's not Cisco btw) instead of taking medication to cope.

Please remember that you are getting PAID to work and Cisco does not owe you anything (nor should they).

Keep hiding behind your meds and you'll always be stuck in the same spot - blaming others for the problems you've created in your own head.

Life is too short to be miserable. Ranting here isn't going to get you anywhere. You are in charge of your own life. Most people who leave Cisco are happier for it.

@OP I kind of felt some sympathy for you until the end of your rant. You are clearly trying to quantify that you are a victim. The reality is that you got yourself in over your head. I would bet that you live in a huge house that is impeccable furnished to impress people. You and your spouse both drive new or fairly new high end cars.

If you need to take medication to get through your life then change your life. It is your life, take responsibility for it instead of trying to find someone to blame for YOUR problems. Not everybody can work in high pressure jobs.
