The Problem with HBAs

Be honest, HBAs want to silence voices questioning the current policy because the status quo because it benefits them. They don’t want the firm to revisit its current policy of allowing HBA roles based solely on geographic location because it might mean a change that disrupts their ability to work with little to no accountability wherever and largely whenever they choose without incurring the costs of commuting. They don’t want ANY disruptions to their sweetheart deal and will shout down anyone that even tries to advocate for a change.

HBAs shouldn’t point the finger at the firm while selfishly praising and protecting both explicitly and implicitly a two-tiered, unfair system that unilaterally benefits only them. If HBAs actually cared about the negative impacts of RTO on hybrid associates they would push the firm for a policy that treats all associates fairly. Instead, to preserve their own interests in keeping the current policy in place they push narratives of “isolation” and raise fears of lack of career progression (as if there is any for hybrid workers) to the forefront so the firm focuses on those manufactured concerns instead of crafting an equitable solution for everyone.

To me and many others, HBAs’ silence, fake concerns, and hostility to change the real problem are as much to blame for the firm’s stance as the c-suite.

If they truly cared, HBAs would push for a policy that is equal for all workers even if that means hybrid are paid more to offset commuting costs or barring that embrace accountability metrics like the badge swiping and other surveillance hybrid associates have to endure. I’ve seen none of that.

This. I am HBA. When I go into the office for in person all hands on deck team meetings and I try to step away to find time to actually work, it’s impossible. It was before as an in office worker with people stopping to talk to you, take a walk, go have lunch… like, no. I have a job to do, leave me alone.

At home I am working. At my desk. Eat through lunch. Do I take an additional 3 mins to throw laundry on the washer during a bathroom break? YUP! But trust me, I spend far more productive time at home than in the office.

Additionally, 80% of my team is HBA and not close to Tempe or STL. Plus the area I support is on the east coast, so no one I work with is even at home office. Why waste time to drive in and sit on a GDamn zoom all day anyway? No thanks.

Not to mention since I am HBA, I’m more likely to reply to calls, teams & email after hours and on weekends. If I had to go to the office, nope. You get a reply when I am IN the office and that is it.

@fm no, I dont know that. I know I sit down, work all day and often dont take a lunch. At most, I have background music or financial news on when I'm working through things on my own. How much time do you spend in office at your desk and actively working versus walking from one part of the building to another, catching up with a former teammate, having lunch downstairs and away from your desk, the list goes on.

HBA and in office are no different. People that want to waste time and slack off will find a way, regardless of location.

@en Yeah, not just water cooler talk but other Zoom meetings. We usually have 7 different Zoom meetings going on in our tiny little work tables. Very hard to be engaged in meetings when there are 7 different people talking on different meetings surrounding you.

I don’t have a problem with HBA and think any role that can be done from home should be. One thing that does bother me is that many of my HBA teammates don’t turn their cameras on during meetings and/or look like they just rolled out of bed. You have a 10 foot walk to work, you can’t take a shower and put on a professional shirt? These people are going to ruin it for their counterparts.

@en Unfortunately, HBA are lazy at their core and almost allergic to actual work at this point. You know they likely have Netflix on in the background and laze around all day long. Their anxiety likely comes from the fear of being called out for being a drain on society

@da I couldn't agree more. I have a medical exception because I have severe IBS and PTSD. The combination is extreme, trust me. Some days I can manage coming into the office for a whole day, or maybe just a partial day, but at least I'm trying. Posts like this, when I already feel very self-conscience about my situation that I clearly cannot control for a hybrid policy ELT put in place that makes ZERO sense (if you can do the job remotely across the country, why can't we in STL?) makes me not want to engage at all. Simply put my head down, do the work and call it a day without trying to build comradery with the team. Then my condition apparently wouldn't be challenged or justified. Or maybe it would just be better if we didn't hire folks with dis a bili ties? Because that seems to be what you are advocating for.

So instead of being happy that they feel well enough to come in and be part of the team, you trash them and project your poor performance on their wfh time. @OP I'm an HBA since before it was even called HBA. Maybe there are cases of this where there's not accountability but not on my team. That kind of thing is a reflection of that HBAs leaders as much as themselves. Because my team is absolutely held to a standard and is accountable.

What gets me are the HBAs who have approval to work from home for medical reasons yet occasionally come into the office, show up for happy hour or being the first to sign up for tickets to events. Yet their anxiety is just soooooo bad they can’t come into the office.

@ak What if your monitoring software proves that your HBA peer is doing more work than you, faster and more efficiently? Stop directing your ire at people taking advantage of the opportunity they were granted. All you're doing is creating division amongst your peers when we should be pi----g UP the org chart, not across it.

@aj Would you be OK with the firm installing software that monitors when HBAs work and how long they work with exception reports provided to high-level leadership? Are you in favor of the firm creating standards for when HBAs need to log on and begin work each day with exceptions only allowed for approved flexible work arrangements?

@af / @OP I guess I just don't see the need to attack them when the firm is the problem here. The FIRM has the power to remedy this aspect and does nothing. HBAs aren't hoarding some sort of opportunity to level out the fairness of benefits.

Take this one, for example, it’s not that complicated.
The thread ID is 1k3kw2jk2. Every post within it gets its own unique ID. The suffix matches the thread ID, but the prefix is different for each post.

@ae - if you are willing to take a pay cut, I would assume your skills are nothing special and can be easily found in St Louis. You should be laid off and backfilled with someone in St Louis.

But you don’t speak for me and other HBAs. We were hired remote not as a favor but to fill in skills gap that the firm was not able to fill easily with local talent.

HBAs would throw a fit if hybrid workers were paid a stipend for commuting/childcare/commuting costs. They want it all and don’t care if it’s unfair. The downvotes to this post are proof of that on their own.

Just look at the unhinged comments from rabid HBAs trying to claim this post was made by a bot from overseas. The belief that some foreign “power” would care much less create a bot to sow discord about a Midwest financial services company is ludicrous. It is obvious that this is a real person (me) with first-hand experience voicing their honest concerns shows how fearful and desperate they are to shut down mere discussion of the topic. Heck, there is a post on here asking about how to trace a poster’s IP no doubt submitted by a lunatic HBA on witch hunt to find me and dox me for simply stating my opinions about RTO policies and HBAs. That’s gross but that’s how far HBAs are willing to go to jealously guard what they have and hybrid workers don’t.

HBAs portray themselves as fair, high-minded, innocent beneficiaries of ansystem out of their control. The reality is they are selfish, vengeful hypocrites that leap at the chance to attack anyone that endangers their privilege no matter how absurd or maniacal they appear in doing so.

@a8 As an HBA, I completely agree those going into he office should be paid more for the cost of the commute and time 💯. There’s not an ounce of me that believes they shouldn’t. In fact, I’d take a pay cut to STAY HBA! Not many HBA would say that.

The reality is that HBA is going away and already largerly has as far as new hires. The only people who will enjoy this privilege longer-term will be the ones who actually posses highly valued skills that are not easily found in St Louis.

I'm not mad at the HBAs. It's frustrating that I'm not compensated for the additional time and money I spend getting up earlier to get ready, purchase clothing for the office, time and gas for the commutes, etc. Not to mention how many HBAs I know keep their kids home over the summer and holidays while I have to spend tons of money sending mine to camp and getting a sitter.

@a8 As an HBA i want you to know that I think everyone that has a job that can be done home based, has coworkers that do the same job from home, and want to be home based should be able to. It makes me sad that people think we dont want that. It is unfair. I thought it was unfair as soon as they announced RTO/Hybrid based on proximity. Everyone should have the same opportunity for flexibility if their work allows. If your colleague can do it from home, you should be able to as well. I dont think we are the boogeymen the OP thinks we are.

This is a BOLD take but yeah, as a hybrid associate, it makes my toes curl to think that I have to spend hours of my week commuting, paying for gas / vehicle expenses, and sometimes being accosted for being late for things outside of my control (uh 64 nightmare this morning for example), while I see HBA’s signing on late, knowing they had to do nothing but roll out of bed. Am I bitter and jealous? Absolutely. I just think us that have to pay the prices, both monetarily and with our time, should be compensated for having to do so.

@a2 I work WAY more as a home based associate than I EVER did when I commuted to an office. I can log in late at night, early in the morning, on the weekend if needed. I’m not rushing out at 5PM because it doesn’t take me 45 minutes to get home now. Assuming all HBAs are lazy is id--tic.
