Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Any advice? I am ready to give up

Being on this site on a Friday evening should screem how stressed and miserable I am... It has been almost 9 months that our department has been revolving about layoffs. Our department was hit more than twice! In between phase 1 and 2, I also witnessed a number of teammates being fired for vague reasons. I have been a yes person throughout my time and yet my manager and my director are just not happy... I have been so stressed I have been crying all day today. I have applied to almost 200 jobs and only got a handful of interviews all ghosted me or hired other candidates.... I think I want to give up on my entire career and my life...If I express smallest amount of frustration, my director immediately react and report to HR! Claiming that I am destroying the team spirit! I am not! I have just put up with too much bullsh-t over the last 9 months and have lost so many colleagues and have worked extra hard to take on their responsibilities..... I am so so tired of my manager and director and HR being on my a-s all the time..... I do not know what to do or where to turn. After almost 10 stages of interview and relocating the entire family to Portland less than 3 years ago, this is what I have got.... Any advice?

Leave IS paid, but sometimes it can be hard to get the leave approved by Sedgwick (who manages leaves for Nike).

OP, yes Nike does have paid leave of absence through the short term disability plan. You will need a medical professional to document the need.

@3xvp+1t8h2Tr9 Thank you. Yes I met with a therapist and she actually suggested the same. Does Nike has paid medical leave? Sorry to ask because to this point in my career, I never ever reached my breaking point..... Some one in this thread said it is unpaid...

@OP you will likely qualify for a medical leave of absence, but you need to be willing to meet with a therapist etc. Those are paid and depending on the severity of your anxiety/depression.

That’s really rough OP. But I’m going to agree with what others have said. The best thing you can do is control what you can control and continue looking for something better while using the mental health benefits you have access to. Sometimes we just have to prioritize taking care of ourselves during the long haul towards something better.

@2cwg+1t8h2Tr9 OP here... Yes I wish I could take leave of absence but it is unpaid... I cannot afford taking care of my family without pay. My wife had to stay home after we relocated to Portland. I have seen on Slack people say it is supposed to be paid but you really don't get paid for months.... I do have a mortgage to pay... I am very hopeless and helpless. Wish my manager would realize while he is reporting me left and right to HR and bad mouthing me what a horrible damage he is causing not only on my career but my mental health. I wish I was part of the layoff at least I had severance and also a reputable separation.... Came to work from Phase 2 only to suddenly find my manager in self-preservation mode! I get it... everyone seems to be self preserving by throwing others on the bus... As if people are now nominating each other for next round by going to HR and making false reports.... So So So exhausted of life.....

I’ve been though similar and it gets worse if you don’t out soon. Even though I still can’t find a job being laid off in recent round has been the best thing to happen for me in a while. Not sure if they’re anything they are possible discriminating against you with, but if so maybe talk with an employment lawyer soon.

Look into Lyra, it’s actually really helpful and easy to use. For those recommending leave, yes it sounds like a great option.. unless you use it then spend your entire leave trying to get it approved while not getting paid. My leave didn’t get approved until months after I returned to work, and it only happened after finally getting someone in HR to reach out to Sedgwick directly. And then I was part of the next layoff round and will always have to wonder if it’s because I took leave when I really needed it

Dear OP- what you are experiencing is a result of narcissistic abuse by Nike leadership. It is a narcissistic culture of use, abuse and discard. You are in a difficult position that many of us have found ourselves….Up against the wall. Make your short, mid and long term decisions of how to get yourself from that sticky situation. Up Skilling is one way, keep your eye out for other jobs, and be open to change but never, ever lose hope, there’s a whole better world outside the over glorified berm

Prioritize your own well being. Nike could not care less about you.

Talk to a Therapist, take a leave of absence and use the time to reflect.

And as hard as it s being to find a job, there are many out there. One will be yours!

Please reach out to a therapist or counselor. Hang in there OP!

I’ve been there. Reach out to the EAP. Meet with a therapist. Take a leave of absence. Take the summer to reset and revive yourself. Reality is, if you’re feeling this way, you probably aren’t representing yourself to your Fullest potential during interviews with other employers.

Hey OP, you sound extremely burned out. Can you take some PTO or even medical leave? Your mental health is more important than a job.

@1sjq+1t8h2Tr9 You know who is liability? The incompetent leader who drove the company to the level it needs layoff to cut cost!

@1sjq+1t8h2Tr9 well said... now act on it! Because you apparently need therapy

I would advise you to seek some serious therapy. Last thing we need is a nut job with a sc--w loose being a serious liability to the people around you.

If you are suffering from depression and anxiety, please see a professional and get a prescription. Your family needs you more than Nike does. Listen to your body and help yourself before you help the company. Also please tell someone you are close to so they can help you out. This is serious. The daily work at Nike has gone on for ages

Like other posters have stated, you still have a job & steady paycheck and family support. Do the bare minimum and use the downtime to either upskill or tailor your resume to each job you apply for. Competition is high but you will land something better!

Stay positive on the job search, and if you’re having trouble attracting interviews then do the bare minimum at work and use the down time to learn and upskill yourself. Use the education reimbursement and consider getting a professional certificate that could help you make a career pivot. And take advantage of the summer, use your summer Fridays, use your PTO, and keep exercising and staying active.

I am sorry this is happening to you. My advice would be to focus on the bright side of things. You still have a job and a paycheck. You haven't gotten another opportunity yet, but it will happen eventually. Your happiness should come from outside of your career, and it sounds like you have family here to lean on. Count the blessings instead of the negatives, and understand that all of this is a temporary hassle.
