Your Co-workers, Employers, and Managers are NEVER and NOT your friends. You can be cordial and respectful, but Never once cross the boundaries, NO matter how nice they are to your face!
Coworkers will throw each other under the bus to protect their jobs or jobs they may want in the future. Coworkers will steal ideas, work and solutions from each other, as well as steal credit for work they did Not do or had very little impact on.
Life, work and working are worse than the Hunger Games or the TV show, Squid ! Always watch your back! And always remember, you have Absolutely NO friends or advocates at your job !
@vb This reminds me of a incident I had years ago.
I was a Dev Manager at another Bank. My team had a history of making one successful release after another with kudos coming in from the multiple Clients. We were a very successful team.
We were in some turbulent times and my Boss called me into his office. He related to me the story of two men walking in a forest who encountered a Bear. The Bear charged at them. Noticing the predicament they were in, one man said to the other, “I don’t have to run faster than the Bear. I just have to run faster than you.”
A few weeks later I was fired from my job as I was blamed for a production incident that was not my fault. I then immediately recalled the story my Boss had told me in his office.
I then realized I had worked for someone who had no backbone and would do anything to protect their own interest.
I subsequently moved on and took my knowledge, skills and abilities elsewhere.
However, it shows the dangers of working in an environment where it is everyone for themselves.

@OP This begs the question Why was such a high profile person who ends up with another high profile job let go from Citi?
I thought he was doing a great job. If not how was it that he ended up at such a prominent position within Citi? Why would he be replaced by someone with no knowledge of Citi and who would have to learn from ground zero on how Citi works?
It gives one the impression that there is far more to what goes on at Citi than what is being told.
There may well be power struggles that take place that have nothing to do with the well being of Citi or its Shareholders.
