Oh yes, NorCal SFO elitism on display. Yep, 'really smart people' pay to walk on feces and needle covered streets, and literally live on top of each other in rented coffin-sized spaces for $3K a month and otherwise own nothing.
Hey San Fran dweller, the rest of the country while sitting in relative splendor and in a dignified manor is laughing at what you have to live like. Not laughing with you, AT you.

If the smart people are in San Francisco I certainly missed that as I noticed less and less civilization there in with each and every business trip there from the mid 90’s through 2010. Moving from failure to clean up the streets to subsidizing needles, feces and garbage in the streets. From careful controlled burns and forest management to encouraging woods full of tinder. From reliable energy to complicated energy laws leading to Enron type malfeasance and rolling blackouts in the state that. OST needs electricity and networking. From border enforcement to waves of undocumented superspreaders overwhelming all health and welfare systems.
If people in San Francisco are so smart, then why are they going backwards into filth, disease, d–gs, fires, unreliable utilities... and why do they keep voting in the same id–ts who are destroying one of he most beautiful states to be blessed with such wonderful resources?
Sorry, If California has smart people then I want to be dumb.

The world has enough "us vs. them". Don't need to impugn people either in coastal cities or elsewhere for their choices on where to live. To each his own.
Having lived in four of the most expensive markets in the country, I can tell you that the pay differential is nowhere close to what it takes to make up the difference in cost of living. You have to care enough about the other benefits of an area to compensate for that.
Some people just don't care about restaurant scenes, or access to outdoors year round, or access to the arts, etc.. , and they're fine to live elsewhere/less expensive and forgo those aspects of living in the more expensive areas in return for land, space, retirement savings, etc.
Too bad the smart people can’t take a plane to relocate to the south and Midwest’s what a shame
@OP. I don’t know where all smart people live but I know smart people don’t post this kind of post. It’s childish and classless and it’s getting old.
Here in the South they won’t let you graduate from elementary school if you don’t know how to spell Midwest...
"Most educated" person here also seems to be the very last one to realize that SF is the absolute worst place to be in the company right now, lol.
Say what you want San Fran, at least we don't have some much human feces on our streets that we have to map it.
In all seriousness though, it makes zero sense to have anyone but customer-facing folks in places with very high COL. No one in SF or NYC should be a paper-shuffler or IT or HR or auditor, or any of the other hundreds of roles that don't require being in the physical presence of customers in those cities. Those jobs should be WFH first, and if not that then in lower COL locations that can have free parking, sane commutes, and the other things that lead to a better quality of life for more workers. It almost doesn't matter how much you pay someone in SF, it will all be eaten up by the COL and/or CA taxes.

Before you go nuts realize that all of the good technology workers go to San Fran, Boston or Columbus from flyover country where the great universities are. All of the bankers and technologists working at banks are C level graduates or they would not be working at Wells on circa 1980 -1990 technology. If you read this board you quickly see that few working here can even put together a cogent post. Bankers asking basic financial questions, many seemingly unaware of the different roles of the Federal government, the IRS and Wells Fargo’s in their paychecks, COVID stimulus and 401K issues.
It is stunning that they serve customers.

Educated people go where the jobs are. If the jobs go to the south and the Midwest, people trained to do those jobs will follow.
Then those areas can deal with increased traffic and rising housing costs.

Not saying that the location strategy makes sense, but if you think the only educated people are in NYC and SF I’ve got some bad news for you, there are cities in the Midwest and South rated above both of them in terms of bachelors and advanced degree per capita. Those two cities may have a leg up because their overall population is higher, but collectively, sort of irrelevant. Then there’s the cost factor, which is what we all should know is driving this. Space and salaries in the cities we are moving away from are way more costly, and since we’re cutting how many more billion over the next 3 years...no brainer.
If I was the OP I’d stop complaining, and move from NYC suburbs to Charlotte suburbs (or whatever comparable cities you want), take the change in weather and lower cost of living with all the other people fleeing. Cheers.
