Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

COVID-19 temporary or possible permanent layoffs

Despite best efforts to “triage” field dispatches, frontline techs are still getting a lot of non essential work. Techs are being bulked or dispatched on SP to bonded pair upgrades, new bonded pair HSIA installs when customer has existing internet service, redispatched on jepped jobs for COVID-19 etc.. it’s still BAU. The alternate dispatch guidelines are still extremely risky. Even if the customer answers yes to four COVID-19 questions the company only wants techs to slightly modify rules that still puts them at risk. Jep or return is difficult.

The potential result is a temporary (infected) or possibly permanent (death) lay-off of techs, their famIly or community members. Safety models show more encounters & risk taking significantly increases odds of a bad result. There isn’t enough PPE, no disinfectant wipes, little sanitizer, 1 mask for most and few or no gloves. The Company needs to mitigate all of these very high risk dispatches until the unknown becomes manageable in the months ahead. They also need to secure proper PPE for techs. Lead don’t follow!

Despite what the public is being told, common sense says masks are a barrier even if they aren’t fail-safe. The medical professionals will advise everyone to wear one in the near future to stop the spread. It’s just right now there aren’t enough mask. Nobody knew the world would need billions of mask this quickly and no business or country would stockpile such a large quantity to meet the current demand. Hindsight is 20/20.

AT&T should follow their own safety creed:

No job is so important or service so urgent that we can’t take the time to perform our work in a safe or environmentally manner!

@ last post

I see you don’t comprehend sarcasm but you are right, the poster could have used something more dramatic. When a fireman dies on the job that’s it, only their sad tragic end. When a tech goes into the homes with potential COVID-19 they can have way more deadly effect from an unseen enemy. All of their family and future customers can be unknowingly infected from them. Aka .. Typhoid Mary. The potential is way worse.

Don’t tell me about odds, a lot of techs are working in increasing hotspots. Here in GA, my local hot wing restaurant just lost a 56 year old and her coworker , no underlining health conditions. Also nearby a 29 year old, no underling conditions. The numbers are increasing rapidly here. So, tell me when you get COVID-19 that there is nothing to it. You shelter in place, Toll! Percentages are great until YOU become one of the statistics.

If you think the percentages are so low, then why don’t you go to the store daily to get your essential items? You won’t because common sense says, lower interactions equals lower odds of infection but you are telling techs to do something you wouldn’t do for non essential work.

So you are equating “possible” COVID-19 exposure to a firefighter running into a burning building with no safety equipment?? Seriously??

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in US as of today = 562,506
34% of confirmed cases are concentrated in New York alone
Current US population is between 325,000,000 - 350,000,000
Confirmed cases nationwide is less than 0.0020% of the overall population

Even if the # of cases (because we are all aware that not all actual cases are being confirmed due to various reasons) was multiplied X 5, it still wouldn’t have impacted even 1% of the population overall.

Summarization of the last two posts which, they are saying from their shelter in place, safe spaces:

Frontline, CHARGE! We have your back in this war. Keep running into that burning building, we are working on getting you oxygen mask, fire hoses, fire suits, tools for your survival. Isn’t that good enough you wimps? Quit because we will be sure to take your place for this non essential work. We are impervious to this virus.

@5ego+14heLJ4n...Hear, hear! Agree 100%. Please just stop all the whining on this board. You front line union folks have been provided the needed PPE in "most" cases already. The company is working hard to ensure you have an abundance of hand sanitizer and gloves. Mask's were recommended by the CDC, not made mandatory which is why T is echoing that same theme to it's employees. You are also being paid an extra 20% across the board on top of your already incredibly generous wages due to the higher risk factor associated with your jobs (Some of you may not even have any if at all exposure at work and you're still getting the hazard pay....Think about that for a minute). Get a grip and get to work. Sheeesh!

I have never heard so much whining. Quit if you are being treated so bad. But just stop your f—ing whining. Man up and do your job. There is PPE available to all. You don’t and never will get to pick and chose what job you are assigned. You don’t know what is essential and what isn’t. So please do us all a favor, quit or shut the f— up.

Numbers of mortality are still climbing everyday but No PPE face mask or coverings for frontline. Thought Company was going by CDC guidelines and recommendations. Yes I want my face covered when I’m doing non essential dispatches in home then, a new one for the next one

Had one of those non essential bonded Installs today. I had to rewire the jack while laying on the floor to reach the wall plate under a built in desk. Also had to go up and down 3 floors to rewire thru other jacks for service. The customer answered No to all 4 CYA company questions so, BAU per the practice. I felt sooo much safer. I was definitely exposed if COVID-19 was present and visa versa. No way to avoid it. This craziness needs to STOP!!

The customer was surfing the internet on his cell phone the whole time and stated they only had a 3 year old. So they had access to internet, had direct tv and it wasn’t an essential service call. They could hotspot until it’s clear.

I also had a SP to bonded pair upgrade but I was penalized for trying to amend the order. The existing, working 25 meg service was within the loop length limits. So I contacted TEC and had it just provisioned to the 50x10 the customer wanted. This should of happened without a dispatch. As a result the order was canceled and I didn’t get proper time credit for my work. I saved a very nervous customer who didn’t want me in their house while providing the service we used to be known. They were appreciative plus it saved me from a potential exposure too.

Well you don’t have to worry about U-verse IPTV installs anymore because they just pulled the plug on that.

“ IMPORTANT U-VERSE UPDATE To help our employees serve our existing customers, we’re no longer selling U-verse TV. Service for existing U-verse TV customers is not impacted.”

3,000 people were laid off permanently (died) due to the Coronavirus in the last 24 hrs. So sorry that frontline’s concerns are such an annoyance for your shelter in place, company troll A$$.

I agree, the company changed when it went from customer driven to metric driven for bonuses and raise’s. Managers with direct reports are now just inhumane trying to hit unreasonable numbers at any cost. Every business needs business controls but this system isn’t sustainable in long term.

I think we need to let you shelter in place trolls go back to your Collaboration Zones. It’s more efficient. It’s your job, of course only 10 to a room 6’ apart. No complaining like we saw over and over on this site after it was initiated until the COVID-19 happened. How stupid of a decision would that be? That’s the situation techs are being put into. Techs think CZ is a poor decision too.

Techs want to work just not BAU until this crisis is over. Only the really essential like what is being touted in the triage statement sent out.

2 more Frontline Techs infected with COVID-19. One in Raleigh the other in Charlotte. Pray that both them and their families will survive this nasty virus.

Thanks for keeping everyone “Safe as possible” AT&T doing non essential work. Wonder how many others were infected by them going into homes and businesses with the lack of PPE. It’s impossible to go into confined spaces and get on the floor with their tools for install or repair and not be exposed.

Hello. Company troll here. Just curious, I can certainly understand the concern over not having a constant supply of hand sanitizer, face masks and gloves for you techs on the frontline, but that issue is only temporary. Once those items are freely available, what will be the next complaint and the next and then the next??? Seems like it would be easier to just post what you really want and move on instead of continuing to bring up an issue that obviously no one can help you with here. I for one would like to get back to discussing layoffs since that’s the title of this board.

About 20 years ago the company changed from dispatch being a tool to help the outside forces be efficient to the outside forces being a tool to help dispatch reach efficiency goals. You are all reaping the rewards of that management epiphany.

As far as techs getting non-essential work goes, this is the same reoccurring problem we have had for the last 5 years ! No one reads the narrative at dispatch ! Its software generated ? Or people generated ? Some tool in management needs to step up and be a man ! And change how our load is dispatched to reflect what all the jep job narratives say !!! Upper management is absolutely useless to us workers out in the field !!! We need that individual to separate himself from the pack ! And yes Iam aware of the pronouns being used in this post !

Really? Read the previous post again. The doctors/scientist are in both the task force and CDC. Vice President Pence is leading the task force. He wouldn’t make that kind of decision on his own without the professional input and approval.

OP, you were right on about wearing face coverings or mask, the supply must be increasing.

Today’s April 2 Coronavirus briefing:

After being asked, Vice President Pence mentioned the task force along with the CDC would be issuing new guidelines on wearing face covers or mask. He said, It will happen in the coming days. AT&T needs to start procurement of face covers or mask for frontline employees. Finally!

To the OP the issue here is the level of expectation you have applied to your employer. When you realize and understand the true piece of sh– company you work for, you can adjust your expectations to the proper levels and your disappointment will disappear...

It reminds me of to be or not to be. Essential or not essential. Doesn't matter if you feel your life is threatened, do yourself a favor and your family and leave your job if you feel you are in jeopardy. Do not let anyone take control of your life other than you or Almighty God. When you feel you are in jeopardy of your health let your conscience be your guide and not your paycheck.

Get ready for the company (shelter in place) trolls comments. Such as; shut up , quit whining, go to work, drama queens. Going to the grocery store is high risk. You know the get off my lawn types.

Going to the grocery occasionally is essential but internet and phone isn’t right now in majority situations. Most people have cell phones and will survive for a short time. The company has removed data limits on phones so they can be used as hotspots for other devices.

Several of my crew were shifted to another turf yesterday. I stopped at their work center to take lunch and use the restroom. I didn’t use the restroom because the yard was full of work vehicles and no personal vehicles. We weren’t told a thing but it’s obvious someone or maybe several have the virus, unbelievable! I could tell the vehicles have been there for a few days because of leaves and other stuff on them. Several but not all had one windshield wiper raised which is done after contractors wash them so, I knew they had there been there for a few days.

Several techs have already been infected but the company isn’t putting out any safety flashes. They don’t have to mention anyone by name but this information is critical to other employees that are working in the area.

We are being dispatched to a lot of different turfs with the new optimization strategy. Don’t know the managers or techs in some of these turfs so we aren’t in the loop. Not looking out for their assets, are they?
