Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I still work at Oracle because I s.u.c.k.

So I admit it. I s—. I have been at Oracle almost 10 yrs. it was good at first, but about 5 years ago we took on a half hearted cloud strategy. Each year after that things got progressively worse. The very best people started to leave then. Some good ones still stayed on, thinking that given just a little more time we could succeed. But within a couple more years they left too. I was always 2nd tier, so with the exodus my ok skills became more valuable to the company. Now, I find myself in a company that’s on fire, with most remaining people fighting and clawing for the escape hatch. Trouble is, I don’t have the skills to get there quickly, so keep hanging on and praying I don’t get whacked.

I have had managers like that. During a review, I outlined the skills I’d like to pick up to help me in my job. Basically I like to understand software engineering and programming better, maybe take a college course. My b*tch of a manager literally laughed at me, and asked me why would you want to do THAT?

It took me quite a few years to realize that she was not invested in ME, but in keeping me around bc I made HER look good.

I swear to God if I saw her on the street, I’d poke her in the eye! Live and learn, children, live and learn.

They do that to us and try and intentionally keep our skills just moderately good enough to do the job. F them man - use your skill, start from the bottom if you have too. Learn all the sh** you are supposed to know. Give them marginal effort and spend all the time you can re tooling. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist just apply yourself!!

There are managers that actively tell their employees that they are no good and can't get a job anywhere else. They tell them their skills are out of date.

But they do that to their best people and they do it on purpose.

I have also seen manager's give the people closest to them credit for things they haven't done. The idea is to make it look like the manager is "helping" them, but the real idea is to make sure they don't get any real skills and leave. I've also seen people who are being helped this way constantly put down by the manager.

Like an abusive spouse, they pretend they are helping them, but really they are keeping control over them. The overall message to their s—ups is "You are incompetent, you have to stick with me cause I'm the only one that will help you".

Sad place to work, Oracle. Imagine how desperate a manager has to be to do that do the people working for them.

At least the OP is honest.

Yup, plus the OP speaks for all Oracle employees.

The remaining ones left are planning to retire within the next 12-18 months. They stick around because it makes no sense to look. I know, I was one of those remaining who retired.

80% is Sun employees bolted within 6 months of the merger in 2011. The remainder left incrementally over the years 2011-2017 And these were the smart ones. When JF was forced out, the writing on the wall. 90% of the remaining people still at Snoracle in 2018 where shown the door.
Guess were they landed at AWS, Google, Facebook, and all the other great places to work.

Jump ship, there is more money and more fun elsewhere.

No you do not s—! They’ve just been telling you that to keep you! Start looking, you will be amazed to find companies that value you for more than the next contractual deliverable message

Sounds absolutely correct. The worst experience is for those who joined O by way of an acquisition.

O wears you down with all the thou shall and thou shall not. Training and promotional opportunities are sparse. Raises and bonuses...yeah right.

You must gather all your motivation and intellectual strength to build up your skills, and GTFO of there.
WHILE YOU ARE STILL EMPLOYED. Believe me, if that decision is taken out of your hands (lay-off), it’s MUCH MUCH more difficult. Not impossible, but a steeper climb.

If I can only get through to one person on this board, I’d consider it a victory.

Here’s my final pitch: Oracle doesn’t deserve the awesomeness that is you. Plenty of employers do. Find them and direct your efforts.

LOL. Hey @Loser, admitting you have a problem is the first step toward recovery!

Does EAP offer a 12-step program designed especially for Oracle employees?

“Hi, my name is Joey. I work for oracle and I s.u.c.k.”

@Loser Oracle Employee - the important thing to remember is that s.u.c.k.ing is a matter of degree. For instance, if you are ex-Peoplesoft then you s— way less than if you are ex-Sun, in which case you will need extensive psychiatric help in order to address your problem.
