Thread regarding Fiserv Inc. layoffs

Job hunt

How many job applications do you submit per week when you are actively looking? The question is for the people who are working and hunting for a new job at the same time, not those who have all the time in the world to do whatever they want. It'd also be good to know how often you reach the interview stage.

Do not listen to 3maa+1lrP2mmG. I was laid off last October and all I did was go on LinkedIn and turned on Looking for Work and the recruiters started to hit me up. At the end I had three companies to choose from, all paying more than Fiserv and NO ONCALL.

In today's world, you should always be looking for your next opportunity... you are the only one that will care about your career!

Even if it takes a while to find something new - Fiserv doesn't even pretend to support Professional Development anymore - so make sure you are improving your skillset. Don't just be content with the skills to work with the archaic technology stack they have.

@3maa+1lrP2mmG makes a good point. Even if your next job doesn't turn out as good as you expect, the next one likely will. If you switch jobs four times you might find a job that you really like. Thanks for the motivational post!

If your skill set is limited to what the HR shill is, then you’re probably not going to have much opportunity elsewhere.

Of course if you’re up to date on skills you should examine your opportunities.

That’s not career advice it’s common sense.

And most places aren’t heading back to offices. Many companies are recognizing savings from real estate and having those who can be remote remain so. So if your tech take a look about and see what offers there are.

Sorry Shilly, your advice is empty and you have no power here.

Don’t listen to this horrible career advice…you are in for a rude awakening all those who ran away are on their second and third jobs…also most credible companies all returning to the office.

I usually have a max of 4 opportunities that I apply to. If something does pan out or there is no reply, I apply to another. This helps in two things - decide which jobs that you truly like, you wont get overwhelmed

I know I have sent enough resumes when I start getting those “ magic root makes it longer emails”, and the Russian ladies want me…

Be careful with dice, monster, and career builder though, they've opened up the job hunter searches to scammers willing to pay a few bucks for quick access. I get dozens of scam emails into my custom addresses for all three, whether I have my profile active or not, though CB has been the worst for a few years now. Also be aware there has been a massive uptick in "remote only" job scams too.

To answer your question: As many as is necessary.

Just be certain that your resume is up to snuff, to get past all the ATS BS most employers use (ATS = "Applicant Tracking System" ; it's a way to look for keywords and weed out any resume that doesn't have enough of them in the right places.) Best bet is to go to a place like TopResume, pay $200 or so, and get your resume overhauled enough to get past the ATS and Workday website BS.

Also, reach out to recruiters and go nuts on LinkedIn. If you're in tech, and you have the skills + experience, recruiters will often come to you. Also, they have a surprisingly rich jobs board you can run through.

Dice, Monster, CareerBuilder, and sites like these are still very useful.

Indeed and ZipRecruiter aren't nearly as good, but it can be useful as well. ZipRecruiter felt like being put on display at a meat market.

Avoid boards like Lensa, Upwork and similar, since they're totally worthless. they usually post stale jobs already filled long ago, and using them opens your mailbox and telephone to being flooded with shady 'offers' from India.
