Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Gas prices and forced return to campus

Sooooo, are those of us who MUST show up on campus going to get reimbursed for gas? And do we get to count our commute time as part of our work day as our "I'm in the remote pilot" co-workers start their work day from home?

Yah. That's what I thought.

Latest unconfirmed rumor: Nike will be trialing a 4-day work week at WHQ this summer. A few reasons:

  • It’s both a great recruiting tool in a tight labor market and an emerging trend in corporate America.
  • It gets employees back in the office 75% of the time instead of 60% of the time. There’s a feeling people will be less bitter about having to come to campus 3 days/week if Friday turns into a day off.
  • Going to a 32 hour work week may allow Nike to skip raises this year on the basis that your theoretically working 20% fewer hours. It’s a win for everyone. Nike doesn’t have to compete against inflation when it comes to raises this year and employees get a permanent 3-day weekend. I will happily skip a raise this year if it means I get an extra day off every week.

No word on this outside WHQ. My guess is that given the complexities of foreign labor laws and the fact that most Nike offices outside of North America already work fewer hours annually this won’t apply beyond WHQ.

Still doesn't cover the lost time.

Don't be a prat.

This board definitely shows how many rear ends work at Nike anymore.

Exactly what you said. This is a pilot program. Nike needs to be given the opportunity to trial run programs in this post covid world before black badges start demanding offset to their additional commute cost...which btw probably works out to be less than $100/mo. in uptick in gas cost.

Really $100/mo.? Yes, Nike is known to pay below market, but if you can't find $100 in your budget each month that's a topic for a different conversation.

THAT is not the point. The point is some people are part of a pilot program and are given the freedeom to work 100% from home while others get to spend commute time and dollars. Nike made the determination. Those who are being forced back should get some commute stipend and be able to count their commute time as work time.

All employees who work at WHQ knew where the campus was located when they were hired. If people choose to live far away from where they work, that is a personal decision. Not something an employer needs (or has an obligation) to get involved with.

Guess what?

Nike used to pay for Trimet passes for all employees so that they could ride to work on public transportation for free. That wasn't a realistic option for many people because it would have taken hours and many tranfers each way, but it was an option that lots of people near a Max line utilized. However, Nike is no longer paying for Trimet passes.

Meanwhile, how does JD get to work? The last time I saw him, he was being shuttled around in one of the Nike Escalade limos.

WHQ is easily accessible by public transportation from all over PDX Metro Area.

I don’t worry about gas as much as I worry about the upcoming 3%-5% raise in August when inflation is hitting 8%+. Any raise below 8% will mean we are effectively taking a pay cut. Given that my landlord is raising my already high rent by 10% in May I can’t afford to be going backwards.

The bigger problem for Nike hq employees is inflation and taking an 8% pay decrease, on an already sub-market salary, yoy

OP, you actually expect your employer to pay you for your time to commute to work and pay for your gas?

How did you ever survive the realities of commuting and working in an office before the pandemic?

Gas has been expensive before.
There’s a lot of good reasons for WFH, but this ain’t it.
