Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

LinkedIn guide layoffs

I can think of at least 2 people I would fire just based on the amount of time they spend (all damn day!) commenting, posting, etc., saving everyone haha on LinkedIn.

Let me get this straight. The Social Media manager for Nike, who still has a job, is still doing her job, and that upsets you?
I don’t see anyone complaining about BM in Jordan. He posts marketing information on any topic or when the wind blows.
It’s not people’s job to show up how you would for them. You’re not paying their bills.
I don’t know SU, but let’s be real. You’re probably the same people mad at the ETW posting on TheVan site.

Oh. I get the SU now. I mean that’s his job, no? Someone has to be proud it wasn’t ALL horrible.

OP here and WHOA! @1iqh You nailed it! Haha I have NO CLUE who SU is, but wow I wish I did know now.

Anyway, my original comment stemmed from the observation that I see a lot of likes and comments every dang day from like 1 or 2 people in particular that make it clear they are spending a lot of time scrolling whilst at work.

How do I know?? I am retired GEN-X for the record! and have the bandwidth to notice things.

@4smy+1t6WPJbG not gonna lie, you come across as really bitter. Really sorry to hear that you were let go in phase 2, I was too. And it su-ks big time. But attacking someone else and making assumptions about their job (which I don’t think is actually posting to social media if you take the time to read her job history on her profile) and value they bring isn’t going to make you feel any better about your situation. And saying that a woman qualified for a management position only because of DEI is actually pretty s-xist. I hope that you can find some support to help you work through your anger and trauma.

@3hmh ok yeah, sure. Those “other” people with follower ship who have been cut are most likley on the shady side. SU is not that, so be real. Nike HR may not align to her social profile or appreciate her posts but they are smart enough to know the backlash, they would face if she was suddenly without employment and shared that update on LInkedIn, which she would.

I read the whole thread (will never get that time back) and this is just a case study in what happens when people are unable to read or see something in life that they disagree with, realize it has zero impact on their lives and just move on.

@3hmh+1t6WPJbG I follow her and read pretty much every post. Almost every post seems to have a purpose of either sharing a perspective of a working mom or encouraging worklife balance. Just because someone talks about themselves in an effort to be relatable doesn’t mean they are a narcissist. That’s your own perception based on your own biases.

Yes I am sure working at Nike helps with her visibility, but if you read the comments, people engage because it’s refreshing to see a leader at a big company sharing what it’s really like to work on corporate as a parent. There is very little representation of that demographic on the platform and so what’s she’s offering is catered to people who otherwise don’t feel heard. That’s social media content creation 101. If anything she’s doing is savvy, it’s that. It’s crazy to think that what she does has built any kind of job security at Nike. I’m sure Hr hates plenty of her posts. Nikes cut ties with people with a lot more influence than her and survived unscathed.

I used to enjoy SU’s posts, but over time I’ve become less interested as they have exposed her narcissism. Sure, she has a ton of followers… But really it’s only because she gets to ride the wave of the Nike brand. if she didn’t work for Nike, would anyone care? That said, can we fault her for building her own personal brand? If you think about it, it’s pretty savvy move as she has essentially guaranteed herself a job .. imagine the outcry across LinkedIn if Nike were to impact her job?

@2xks, yes it’s true. Younger generations don’t think enough about social media and don’t have a full understanding of have much social media is controlling, dictating, and ultimately ruining their lives.

Let Jaron Lanier explain it to you. This will be the most insightful 21 minutes you’ll hear in 2024:

@2gow, who said anything about the power of social media? Who denied that it’s a powerful force?

Fentanyl, plutonium, earthquakes, and a Taco Bell bean burrito with extra cheese are also powerful forces.

Doesn’t mean they’re good or that society is better off for having them.

Those who don’t understand the power that social media has to sway thought and opinion are probably the same ones who copy and pasted that Facebook post that said “I don’t give Facebook permission to sell my data.”

@2qjw+1t6WPJbG Literally only people of a certain generation think that. No one else cares. Because it’s really not that deep.

First let’s recognize social media for what it is: a personal branding exercise, and a place for people to expose their inner (and now outer) narcissist. It’s all part of our “Look at me!”, “I’m the star of my own show!” culture and society. Selfies only exacerbate this sad dynamic where a corporate drone instead wishes they were an “influencer”. Yes, it’s cringe.

This is why rational people find it distasteful. It isn’t “jealousy”, “envy”, or whatever other excuse someone wants to throw out to side-step the fundamental truths found in that last paragraph.

People who constantly post on social media look silly and unserious. All the worse when, as many of us have seen, an employee is logging posts after posts during work hours. Some say “But our work hours are flexible and we work from 5:00AM to 10:00PM!” Please. You’re fooling no one. Perception is still reality, and in this reality where a person is posting throughout the workday that perceptions screams “This person clearly isn’t that busy and/or doesn’t have a clue how badly their posting habits reflect on them as a professional.”

Can you imagine a Nike of 30 years ago where an employee was wasting their time playing on the Internet all day? PK would kick them in the rear, maybe literally, and ask that person if he/she was actually interested in working for Nike. That was back when people weren’t willing to call stupidity “brave” and “daring”.

I’d like to know how you have any idea how much time anyone spends on social media during the day? People can write and schedule posts ahead of time. People are allowed to take breaks. People answer personal calls and texts during work hours all the time. People start working at 5am and end at 10pm because we are a global company. This is such a stupid nitpicky grievance.

The intolerance some of you have for disagreement is astounding! What unsubstantiated narratives are you all crafting in this echo chamber? Who is SU, and who cares? OP didn't mention them once. It seems like most of you are disjointed and commenting on a different post entirely.

@uuf+1t6WPJbG
You are incoherent. Accusations of s-xism were totally unnecessary here. A notch or two below competitive virtue signaling — it's pretty gross to incite outrage in bad faith as a personal device.

I’m trying to pull some clear context from the conversation here. There is too much crosstalk and misunderstood intent clouding the point.

Wasn’t OP calling out the disproportionate amount of time particular employees spend on social media during working hours?

Since when is advocating for worklife balance and caring for the people on your team shameful for Nike?

I would bet that if anything she reflects Nike as having those core values, true or not.

it bothers people because she represents Nike whether she likes it or not. whether she condones it or not. She's the social media lead for Nike. You don't bring shame to the brand. She's bringing shame to the brand. that's why people don't like it. don't f with the brand. get behind it.

we are in the middle of getting back to our roots as a brand. we don't need this person causing more noise and being off-brand.

Being visible or staying invisible and just applying to jobs…
Making comments or staying silent…
Sharing selfies or using a passport photo…
Posting news or liking posts…

All just choices
One might be right for one person and not for another one
Why is it so difficult to just respect everyone’s choices in their lives?
If it effects you negatively, then think why
Instead of humiliating others
Do you think making others invalid will validate you?

SU is only being the scapegoat it’s about people sharing stuff other than boring as f- congrats messages and announcement posts and reposts. It’s also not a gender issue it’s mainly about if you can tolerate differences or not. Lots of people can’t and they blame some more visible others as being cringe freak weird insufferable etc. Keep being the perfect spotless human being you are and in your free times be a lazy as f- (cyber)bully. You’re so cool congrats!!!!1111

Oh yeah you’re worried about her too much now. Worry about yourself she’s not the only one who’d be sharing ‘cringe?!’, not the first or the last!

Worry about your own problems bringing you on this site instead of throwing sh-t at random people who’re using their social profiles as THEY SHOULD

Maybe start thinking about why it disturbs you? Do you want to do the same thing but can’t? Hey that’s normal and everyone understands!! But you can try stop making prople ashamed about themselves on an anonymous website just because they are using their f* freedom of expression. Why it bothers you so much?? Why selfies bothers you so much, I’m sure your gallery is full of selfies you’re too shy to post. Enough people are sick of this sht. And yes not only but especially women!!!!!

How are you even complaining about your manager’s toxic behaviour while you’re doing the same type of thing to someone else behind a screen? If they make you a manager you’ll probably be doing worse to your subordinates

“She is young (do we count late 30s as young since that’s still close to 20 years working experience?) therefore her lived experiences are invalid and not true. Only my lived experience is true and accurate. Everyone should be forced to do life the way I did life. My way is the only way. Women are supposed to be quiet and not say anything when they carry 80% of the family and housework and work full time. When you see opportunities for change, you’re supposed to go on anonymous sites and bi--h about it instead of bringing conversations to the table.” That’s what you sound like.

It seems like she has more fans than haters, even when someone sh!ts on her on this site she has people come out of the woodworks to support her. Why do the haters continue to read her posts and not unfollow or block? Or, message her directly and provide her constructive feedback instead of hiding behind an anonymous site. Instead it seems like you are such a miserable troll that loves to complain and do nothing about it.

its not just that they are afraid of losing their job... its that we are ashamed of what she writes.. its so so so cringe. She's young, she doesn't know yet. she hasn't lived enough life.... she's going to look back at all that she wrote and shake her head when she's wiser and think - wtf, why was I such a p&****y....

SU or any other woman who shares their mind, life or whatever the f* they want on their socials are 1000 times more brave and intelligent than anyone anonymously spreading hate. And I don’t even know her or like all her posts. But I like that she’s using her socials in the whatever way she wants, think it’s inspiring and apparently it bothers some insecurities. It’s just what it is; anyone who does this spreads the same toxic culture they’re complaining about!!!

People on this site love to anonymously sh-t on SU. And yet you would never have the guts to say these things to her face. Because you’re cowards.

No one has to use social media the way you’d like them to. You’re the real freak if you expect thousands of people to think and behave the same way you do, especially for singling out someone (surely a woman) who is daring enough to be visible on many irrelevant people’s feeds despite the hate. Opposing a toxic culture is different from anonymously spreading hate. Bye.
