Just like BYOD ushered in taking away corp cell phones (except in CA, of course), VDI and those stations in the office are setting the stage for them taking back corp laptops. They’ll say you can work in the office if you don’t want to buy a laptop or use one you already own. If you want the “privilege” of WFH, you’ll have to provide your own equipment. Just planting that seed for everyone so it’s not a rude awakening when they finally make it happen. First, they need to get their sh-t together with VDI rollout…but it IS coming. Chase already does this and you know they can’t do something that we won’t copy.

In terms of actual personal cost, there are lots of workable options for devices that would enable connecting to VDI for a personal cost that’s barely anything. You could probably do it with a rasberry pi hooked up to a monitor. It’s more the principle of this that’s frustrating.
And also if you do anything more technically complicated than basic Microsoft office apps, VDI can be a pain.

Yes we can work in the office on their machines…but it’s not 1995. Why are we going backwards as a company? Corp laptops have been provided to a lot of people for a long time. Wish covid had never happened for lots of reasons, but it has f’ed up our work flexibility that many of us have enjoyed for decades. I bet we would all be happily WFH with our laptops if it had never happened…

Wow-so surprised so many of you are A ok with taking on the expense of buying your own laptop for work. I feel an employee should be provided ALL equipment to do their job, including phone (if your work involves a lot of travel) and a laptop. If I’m buying my own equipment and paying for the internet, I’m practically a contractor, but I still have all the rules and restrictions of being an employee, like RTO and paying for my parking (which they should also pay for IMO). It’s the worst of both worlds.
You all have been so brainwashed to think this is good for you. I used to think my coworkers were victims of corp greed, but now I see you are all sleepwalking through life and you deserve what you get. So kid yourself this is all good for you. It isn’t.

Fine, buy your own stuff and be cool with it. I will probably cave and buy when the time comes because I want to WFH that badly, but I won’t be happy about it and yes, for those who will likely be unable to resist, I am making my exit strategy.

I've been hearing about BYOD for laptops for at least a few years. What su-ks is the leader in my org at the time thought it was great. Really? FU. Why should I have to pay for my own equipment to do company work? I got a new laptop last year so this one will be around for a few years.

@1zfx why would WF set up "laptop stations" instead of using terminals? I thought the whole point of cloud desktops was to end the practice of buying laptops for end users.
Regarding your other argument, why wouldn't I be okay accessing WF from my personal hardware, particularly if remote? I'm not limited to their short-sighted cost-saving 1-2 HD monitors per desk. I can have two 4k TVs that each mimic having 4 20"+ monitors so I can have one with my own personal stuff and then one with WF that I will only interact with when necessary. It's the ultimate work-life balance productivity hack.
If WF were smart they'd be buying 4k TVs to use as monitors, but that's far too innovative for this company.
Working remote is only half the reason for being 'ok' with using your own device. The other half is not needing sh-t / slow tech support to fix minor things when they go wrong. I can take care of my own PC just fine and I hate how everything is so locked down on "work" PCs. Won't be a problem on my own device.
I can only imagine if wells can see or track everything I do on a BYOD. I’m sure they will love hearing club music while I’m blowing my bonus in the champagne room at the adult venue in a town near you.
This is the most insightful response. I have shared in the past that before the pandemic Wells had ALREADY started to cut off remote access with some of the Operations team that were previously flex. Literally took away access with their tokens. It was like a month prior to the pandemic. They told them they had to come into the office to work and could NOT work remotely.
They are already setting up stations as we speak with laptops in office and will roll out setup to all of the hubs. If the writing isn't on the wall yet I don't know what else to say.
On another note, the amount of you all that are ok with using your personal laptop, even buying your own laptop, to work for a corporation worth almost $150 billion just so you can possibly work remote is crazy. These corps can literally get away with anything.

When they told me that I would have to use my own phone, I was told that I wouldn't have to buy a new one. Then when I tried to use my own phone, well I had to buy a new one.

If they wanted to do that, they could have already. They control what kind of network we can attach to. It'd be easy to limit it to in-office wifi.
Anyway if they want us to never work or receive calls while off site, bring it the F on. I could use the 80% reduction in hours worked.
Use your own laptop/desktop with VDI is wonderful. Easy to switch between work and personal stuff.
WF won't do it if JPM has not. Like monkey see, monkey do? So are you saying that both JD and CS are monkeys?
What you need to really be worried about is after the complete elimination of corp owned hardware then they will turn off all remote capabilities with one click.

Very old news. As you can tell from some of the responses, people would rather use their own machines anyway. That’s no comfort to users who are um… challenged in the computer literacy dept. WF field techs won’t help them fix a personal device. This does not apply to execs. FTs have been working on their personal devices for years.
Given it sometimes takes 30 mins to logon to the WF brick. I’m good with this.
Our laptops are garbage and hamstrung by tech nonsense, so I'm totally fine with it.

this has been in the works for a while and as Wave rolls out and everyone gets thin clients you won't have to bring a laptop back and forth. they specifically say that when they go to byod you will not be required to buy your own, it is optional.
Now they may decide no laptops for people and you have to use your own but that will probably be a while.
I miss the days where I could log off at the end of the day, go home, and not think about work until the next day
