Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Are you still planning to retire from Nike?

I used to, but I no longer do. Too many things have changed to either want to retire from here or to feel like it's a realistic possibility with all the firings and layoffs that have been happening non-stop. It saddens me since I've been here for a while, but it's something I've now come to accept.

@2nnp+1tE0q3XA - what you say is correct, that ESPP is a valuable tool to accumulate shares at a discount. Over time it can really add up.

However, that its in no way a retirement benefit. It is a standard benefit that most companies offer at the same discount rate.

@1ypm+1tE0q3XA I disagree. The 401k at Nike is better than average and if you max out both that and the ESPP you can accumulate a hefty sum over time. The ESPP alone is the reason I’ll be retiring at 55 instead of 65+. Problem is too many employees don’t fully understand just how powerful of a wealth building vehicle the ESPP is if you take full advantage of it.

There’s a reason the ESPP is often referred to as “the Nike employee intelligence test”. It’s a very simple test with one question: “Do you understand the power of consistently investing in a vehicle that provides a guaranteed, minimum annualized return of 30%?” Over the years I’ve been shocked with how many people I’ve encountered who aren’t putting every extra penny they have into the ESPP. Even worse I’ve met many employees who aren’t investing in the ESPP at all. Over the years I’ve sat down with new, younger employees and actually worked out the math with them to demonstrate how the ESPP can help them accumulate wealth. Each and every time their faces lit up. They had no idea until it was literally explained to them with pen and paper.

Nike has great retirement benefits. You just have to be smart enough to use them.

Retire?
There are no retirement benefits from Nike.
"Retire" just means "quitting" and you can still give your money to the employee store.
Depending on how far away from retirement age you are, relocating to a company which DOES have retirement benefits is in your best interests.

I came here about 10 years ago, never expected to retire here… also didn’t expect to hang around this long.

I don’t know why I stay, maybe it’s the craziness of the work… maybe I’m crazy…? But I have my ups and downs. Been to enough places that you’re going to have your toxic bosses, favoritism etc..

But I’ve grown with a lot of my coworkers. They’re reliable… I try to follow suit. I’d probably say the thing that keeps me here is my coworkers, outside of that… Nike is just another company.

I have never expected to retire from Nike. When started everyone talked of the good old days, blah blah…. Its just a job.

If you retirement plan includes retirements right around the time you hit 50, then possible. Anything above 50 is not probable unless you have very specific valuable expertise.
