Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

No need to be suspicious of the alumni group.

They have no formal connections to Nike. They are a bunch of nice people that are still drinking the koolaid.

They’ve been around for years. Your lack of knowledge reflects only on you. If you are even mildly active on LinkedIn you would have seen them.

Also, it’s impossible to prove a negative.

@1xjr+1raaMbj6 27 year Nike veteran?

The alumni group is harmless however, as a 27 year veteran of the swoosh, I have no interest in anything that former colleagues are doing now. Let’s face it, most of the 6453 Alumni folks “aged out” of Nike … what or how is the alumni group of any value to a person? Do said members have job connections? Probably not. I choose not to live in the past and relive the glory days of what was once a great company. Joining 6453 will not net one anything tangible other than emotional support and even then, who wants to sit around and talk about the “what ifs”? My advice is to move on from Nike and start fresh- whether it be a new job with a new company (again that can only happen if alumni have connections which is unlikely considering their age and their lack of experience outside the berm). Move on already. And PS the Nike “historian” who loves to be the Nike know-it-all can shut the f up. Enough already. Retire with grace and dignity instead of being stuck in the Nike time warp,

@ 1guc+1raaMbj6 Coincidence? Wrong…

@apa+1raaMbj6 The group name didn't come from Pre's number just like Nike's phone number all over the place ends in 6453. It's just from the phone keypad. But that Pre's record is that number in reverse is an amazing coincidence. But could that "reversal" also where the idea behind EKINs came from?

Why can’t some people just move on from Nike?

All this is just social fodder for their own exploitation

Move on, get a new job, live in the present

The questions regarding “6453” are beyond incomprehensible. Those that are asking either never worked at nike, are brand-clueless or just straight-up joking.

On the one hand the alumni group is good, as they provide support to laid off employees. But, I can’t help feel that they contribute to the situation that ‘kool aid drinkers’ allow their career to define them as people. You know the type: Nike license plate covers, only wear Nike, only hang out with Nike people, post/repost Nike things on Linked In…. If/when they are laid off their world collapses, but the alumni group is there to help breathe oxygen into the notion that they are/were complete humans by working at Nike.

I found them incredible refreshing and much more open to have candid conversations about what’s working and not that inside the berm.

Also for someone who’s a geek for and loves this industry it’s a nice community.

They are good people, and no doubt many were treated just like many this week are being treated. That said, I think they have nostalgia for what the brand was years ago.

I’m active on LinkedIn and never heard of the group until this week too.

What does being active in it entail? I’m thinking of joining to work through the treatment while employed and layoff. It would be nice to have someone to relate.

Edited to add backwards obviously. And the last 4 digits of Nike’s switchboard that spells Nike on a keypad.

The alumni group is 100% authentic and amazing. No funding whatsoever from Nike and free to join with amazing resources available.

It’s Pre’s record in the mile:

Steve Prefontaine, “Pre”, was one of the most charismatic, talented runners ever and a top Miler too with a 3:54.6 personal record – the 9th fastest performer at the time (tie with Marty Liquori) – set at an exciting, highly anticipated 1973 Hayward Field showdown race won by fellow 1972 U.S. Olympian Dave Wottle.

One hundred percent - I was so traumatized by my time at Nike (I worked in HR) that I was SUPER skeptical of the alumni association.

I couldn’t have been more wrong - unlike the majority of alumni associations, there is no funding from corporate. I’m guessing because it’s an accepted truth that so many alumni have extremely negative feelings / knowledge of all kinds of stuff / that the company doesn’t want to encourage any kind of collective effort.

That being said there’s a real mixture - some koolaid drinkers (who in fairness where there for the glory years and have fond memories) but also plenty of folks that are finding a way to process their trauma, as far as their NDA’s will allow.

That makes me suspicious that they are deeply uncool.

6453 spells NIKE and is the last 4 digits of their corporate phone number.

OP here. No idea. I wish I knew!

I would imagine it’s some weird reference from the Bowerman/Knight era.
