Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Not so many people opting for VSP?

Is this true? I’m surprised, frankly. We can expect massive RIFs immediately afterwards in order to meet cost-cutting targets. Is there some not so obvious reason people are not taking VSP? I want to take it, now I’m wondering if there’s something I overlooked. What’s your take on it? Any info that can shed the light?

Since I wrote all my goals and performance reviews ever since they went online I don’t think they are worth anything personally. My boss just regurgitates a couple items and adds something like good job before it like a little gold star. At least my boss many years ago was honest about using my goals and performance review to add things to their own.

I’ve tried to bring up career stuff for a long time to each of my managers and they always “look into it” and then just blamed their boss why things couldn’t happen or courses couldn’t be paid for.

@1jfe+1tzcJBLJ If you've had 15 good years, then starting a new job shouldn't be all that hard as you will easily prove your worth in a few months.

I've looked at performance reviews in the past but never used them in any real capacity. Those HR records don't carry as much weight as you may think it does.

Agree with @1vew+1tzcJBLJ . "My current leaders don't talk about my career at all as they are too busy managing to their bosses".... SO TRUE in GTS. Very little, if any, time spent on career discussions. If you don't initiate the conversation, nothing happens. They pay attention on when you apply for another job and are afraid to loose you. Then they give the old song-and-dance about how it's not green on the other side....

Goodwill built up over the years. If you've been here for 15 years you have at least 15 written performance reviews, hopefully all good. Things suddenly go bad with a new manager. Wait a minute. For 15 years you told me I was doing a good job, now all of a sudden Im not? It's not me, it's the manager, and here is my proof. If you go to a new job, you start from scratch.

Agreed with @1ewh+1tzcJBLJ . Many of the 'leaders' who saw my great work and what I have done to show excellence are gone and I'm stuck with those that haven't. My current leaders don't talk about my career at all as they are too busy managing to their bosses. So yeah, don't think that they have your best interests above their own because they don't.

If you are not sure, ask yourself when they last asked you about where you are in your career and what your aspirations are. And if they actually have, excellent because you are part way there. Then ask yourself when they offered up suggestions AND gave you opportunities to go towards that goal.

Exactly.

“ goodwill built up over years here.”
Leadership changes so new people don’t care and more than likely the leadership you probably have doesn’t care but to fake smile and say thank you. Don’t stay because you think anything you have done in the past matters because it doesn’t.

Do you know people who left VZ who is making more in their new job? I don't. So spend the incentive payment living until you can find a lower paying job where you will start with less time off and no goodwill built up over years here. No thanks.

If you don’t take the package and get rif’d you won’t get the enhancements. I was specifically told there will be a RIF and my role is going to be eliminated. Whether this is true or just a false pressure move to get me to take the VSP, I’m not taking the risk.

I am agree with @uxz+1tzcJBLJ
the diff between VSP and regular severance package is 25 weeks max
If i can stay another 6 month and then got RIF, I will not lose any money
don't forget during these 6 months working, I will earn additional vacation time, 401k match, STI , RSU, medical benefit, etc

I DECIDED I AM NOT TAKING VSP

Insurance costs are insane. Even if you have the 75 points, if you're not medicare age, insurance for one person is $17,000 a year.

I'm taking a risk since I have to find new work before I run out of health insurance. I'll run out of health insurance before I run out of money unless I start paying for it which will just eat away at savings. I'm confident that I have in-demand skills that will translate well to other industries and across a lot of different job families. Therefore, I think I can find another job in the next 6 months that will make me happier doing work that I find more fulfilling. I will be looking for remote opportunities first since that is my preference. However, since I am in the NY/NJ area, there are opportunities that I can take when push comes to shove. I will do this all the while I work on some side hustles and other opportunities.

This is another growing pain for VZ. Some will survive and some will not. You can try to coast...and squeak by maybe....They have a number they need to reach, and are going to no matter your expertise, time with the company, or loyalty. If you can get the 60 weeks, leave...find another job somewhere in a company that possibly has their act together a little more than VZ. Stay? see how it shakes out and if you make the cut...stay until you find something else. A RIF is coming...no doubt. How big? who knows...I'm tired of living in this constant fear two times a year....I'm out. I'm confident I'll find another job somewhere..

@qni+1tzcJBLJ has the correct answer.

The only other consideration is how much stress you can deal with. Remaining people (after VSP/RIFs) will be required to take on even more work.

To me, it's not 60 weeks of pay you need to consider. The standard severance package has been 35 weeks for a long time. So you are really taking the VSP to gain an extra 25 weeks severance pay. It's not worth it to me for 25 weeks pay.

If you are afraid of being RIF in future, therefore I am taking VSP now, then you are making a BIG mistake.

Taking VSP should only be considered if you are confident that you can afford medical and living expense after leaving Verizon via new employment OR your own money
