Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Core hours?

My manager let the team know that starting next week they’ll be implementing core working hours. I’ve always worked 7-3 because it works best with kid drop off/pick up but am now being told I have to be in the office until 4pm no matter what time I come in the morning? My manager said core hours is company wide, is that true? I’ve been fine with the 4/1 but this feels unnecessary and I don’t know why this is being done when our whole department was reliably in-office during the 3/2. I have multiple coworkers that are also upset being told they can no longer work a more flexible 8 hours work day (come in earlier or later). This doesn’t feel like Nike anymore.

I've been told every team is allowed to make their own core hours that make sense for them

Core hours were never a thing. If introduced they’ll need to specifically call out that it’s not ok to disappear during the day to play soccer, go swimming, or use the gym. People will now need to do those activities outside of core hours.

It's sad that you feel this way. I can only assume you're a newer Nike employee. I'm not and this has never been how Nike has operated. We've always been open to flexibility and understanding that we're all human beings with lives outside of work. We had a great balance of work, even with most of us working 45+ hours, and we flourished. We measured output, engagement, etc.. Period.
Now, we're being forced into a facade of caring about people, when we don't behind closed doors. We wanted to be here when we could. It was fun. It was inviting. It was exciting. Your mentality is the very reason people are running for the exits.

Before Covid, Core hours was a published policy of being onsite from 9-3. The policy is no where to be found in the system but many rumors have swirled around it returning.
I wouldn't be surprised if it returned but it being changed to 4pm. The original 3pm time was selected for many reasons. I would be highly disappointed if it returned as 4pm as it would defeat the purpose of why it was created to begin with.
I don't know what the heck has happened to this company but we've completely lost our way. We're creating an environment that no one is happy in and that concerns me deeply as a long time employee. I've never been able to work just my 40hrs and that was ok because of the flexibility.
With the loss of flexibility, it will be hard for people to support very early or late night meetings, weekend support, etc., without resentment or allowing any emotion to be excited to do any extras. It will be difficult to retain talent with this mindset.

This might get downvoted but seriously, stop complaining. Some people were just (and more are about to be) laid off and they would happily take your place. There aren’t many jobs out there so good luck finding another one soon. The unemployment numbers are skewed because so many people have been out of a job for so long they aren’t counted because they aren’t eligible anymore.

Try to find a growth mindset here and if you can’t, find another job that can work with your schedule. Or send your kids to daycare and pick them up after work. Stop being so entitled and be thankful, if you’re laid off good luck finding someone else who will accommodate your requests.

See if you can get in writing from the manager. If there is an important meeting that happens to be at 3.30 PM and that time works for everyone in the meeting then you may have to adjust. Having said that you should be forced to stay till 4 if you have put in your hours and there is nothing critical.

Also ask manager if core hours is till 4 PM then is it okay to skip all GEO calls (if you have any) that happen early morning or late evening ?

Been at Nike for a long while. It’s possible this is a “thing” they are introducing, but I think it depends team-to-team and manager-to-manager. Smart leaders will do what’s best for the team. We do have a few micro mangers across our broader team who will love this. SMDH

This isn’t true. It’s a bunch of “supposed to” rules, but there is nothing in writing and nothing has been reiterated. Prove me wrong.

Nike for over 10 years here and although I can't say I've ever seen it written down as a policy, I have definitely heard multiple times core hours as a concept and it usually meant 9 to 4 pm. It seems like since Nike can't hire competent managers who lead with purpose, passion, compassion and empathy, we're all getting stuck with leaders amd managers who only know how to be overpaid babysitters and micromanagers. Yay team!

Sounds like your manager is being not-so-subtle about forcing the team to put in a solid day's work.

I’ve never heard of core hours, our team is staggered with when we arrive (anytime from 7-9am) and then we all leave anywhere from 3:30-5pm. Everyone is reliable and works hard I can’t imagine my manager enforcing core hours. Is your team not showing up or…..?

Thanks for the insight. No, I don’t take lunch I eat at my desk because my partner works in healthcare/shift work so it’s always made the most sense for me to handle drop off/pick up. I’ve been with Nike 7 years now and have never heard the phrase “core hours,” management has always been really flexible with letting people come in earlier or later depending on their personal lives and at least before the pandemic and during the 3/1 my leadership has never once mentioned core hours as long as we do our work well and are available (It’s common for me to take 6am or 8pm meetings at home around these hours to connect with other GEOs). Again, I’m fine with 4/1 but it just feels weird to all the sudden have management be so strict about when you’re visibly in the office. Pull my badge history and VPN, you can see I’ve come in every day 7-3 and take meetings when needed outside those hours and have never complained I don’t understand what staying until 4pm does

Core hours is not new. In the past it was 9 to 4.

7 to 3? That is only 8 hours. Do you not take a lunch?

I would ask where in HR, or me portal, or workday that info is published. Call the bluff. Ask for it in writing.

Last I heard about core hours, they were 9 - 3. Everyone was expected to be present and available during that window. That was a few years ago though.
