Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Always be prepared

Companies are in business to make money, not to provide jobs.

The sooner you realize that companies will let you go at any time, no reason legally required since it is an “at will” employment relationship, the better off you will be.

Always be prepared on where you will go if laid off. Always keep an emergency fund covering 6 months expenses so getting laid off doesn’t ruin yours and your family’s life.

An old book from the 1990’s pointed out that successful people accept the fact that for things you have no control over, don’t worry about / try to change them, just realize how they are.

As a regular high tech worker, you are not in control. Realize this and prepare for the worse.

A sound advice by @6frn+18yqs766 .

This is 100% fact. I thought my job at another company was safe. I was in budget and finance management. My job was to insure we stayed on budget, projects were on budget, and come under budget. When I was laid off, I had save $13M for the quarter. The quarter after I was gone, $32M over budget and the quarter after that $68M over.

The story is never be a slave to a company that will get rid of you in a minute. EVERYONE and I mean everyone is replaceable in a public company. Never think you are too good or too connected to be touched. The fact of the matter is you are easily replaceable for far less money.

Listen if you don't agree that our products are like avocado and toast... then you must not be a 40 something women VP trying to appeal to her teenage daughters to use Webex instead of Zoom.? You know it's bad when the Product Marketing VP's daughter prefers Zoom to Webex.. so she tried a marketing campaign that seemed cool to her teenage daughter ( silicon valley loves avocado toast, most of my customers drink beer and eat jerky) ... My customers don't know what the Webex brand is .. they just think it is slow and clunky.

2021 predictions, the BU's will pick their own people to do field marketing instead of using Collab Product Marketing.

I think where ELT struggles is that they genuinely do want to care about their employees- people deal and all that, but they also need to make LRs. This of course comes across as hollow and hypocritical to employees but perhaps HR can work on slowly shifting this to something that is more transparent. I know someone in leadership reads these comments as I have seen some very specific ideas I've posted on here implemented.

You need more than a 6 month buffer nowadays. Especially with people like Chuck and Fran at the wheel of most tech companies you better keep at least 1 year and thank god I did especially with Cisco making promises to convert me after 18 months and never did. I already went through month 6 and going on month 7 of looking for work.

@1pzo+18FJJeVW No need to. I work for a corporation with high ethics. There are plenty out there. Don’t try to gaslight that Cisco’s treatment of existing employees is the norm.

If you don't fit the current darling demographic (racially, age, gender/identity, ...) you'll be floating to the top of that cut list.

I am not interested in working for a leadership team that has such low ethics and low capability that it reduces a human to nothing more than a cost line on a spreadsheet. If you find that ok then Cisco is the place for you. There are far more effective and ethical ways to lead a company.

Cisco's objective is to cut costs while maintaining brand value. Let the stealth layoffs continue in 2021.

AND don't forget this: Cisco is not your moma or your daddy or blood relative. Not even human.
