Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I thought I was safe

I was such an id–t. I thought as long as I went above and beyond the company would see what a valuable asset I can be - then I was hit in the last round of layoffs. No one is safe here. I’ve seen people with more years of experience than I laid off and some with less than a year gone at the drop of a hat. People who think they are irreplaceable are just as easily escorted out when their time comes. No one is valued here. Yes I’m bitter but I think I have every right to be.

If you don't fit the current darling demographic (racially, age, gender/identity, ...) you'll be floating to the top of that cut list.

yeah, learn to be my manager: not writing down any specs. No design docs. Everything is from his brain. Write code without comments. Makes him harder to get fired. Although I wonder how he'd feel living the level of soil and be able to go through his life, is it meaningful.

Companies are in business to make money, not to provide jobs.

The sooner you realize that companies will let you go at any time, no reason legally required since it is an “at will” employment relationship, the better off you will be.

Always be prepared on where you will go if laid off. Always keep an emergency fund covering 6 months expenses so getting laid off doesn’t ruin yours and your family’s life.

An old book from the 1990’s pointed out that successful people accept the fact that for things you have no control over, don’t worry about / try to change them, just realize how they are.

As a regular high tech worker, you are not in control. Realize this and prepare for the worse.

Regardless of your work ethic, if you're overcompensated or don't fit the current darling demographic (racially, age, gender/identity, ...) you'll be floating to the top of that cut list.

Why would you care about a public company? Just do as minimum as possible. Keep your skills up so you can apply to your side gigs. Stop haeing an employee mindset always trying to impress the upward looking bosses

Humans are biased. I have noticed that in my life. Few of my managers were fair and others were totally biased. One of the biased one hired his relative and gave him double promotion within few years. Companies say equal opportunity Blah blah blah..... they are all biased. If you belong to their tribe, you are safe otherwise they will cut you during layoffs.
If your whole group is affected due to outsourcing or EOL of product, then it is understandable.
Life is not fair. Don’t give up..... prepare for interviews and you will surely find a better job.

It is a c-apshoot at Cisco - loosely tied to your performance, but mostly based on how well you get along with your manager, a bit of luck and timing. Also how good your upper management is at expanding their empire.

Not another thread on same topic. Greed, lay-off & outsourcing is everywhere in valley. No one cares about the other guy. They only think short term these days.
