Sneaky move. Demotion is the new redundancy.
I would much rather have stability right now and just take a demotion. You can start looking right away and get out under better circumstances! I can’t imagine being stuck unemployed during another bad economic year.
@1oit - You’d be shocked to learn that medical leave doesn’t reverse irreversible medical conditions caused by stress at work. And you can’t just up and take medical leave, it’s insanely complicated and almost more stressful than working.
The job market is terrible. if you can afford to be unemployed for a year plus then maybe take the severance and enjoy life. if you can’t, rethink accepting the demotion. Especially if you have the unvested stock.
@1aug multiple people I know laid off in November and December are top talent and struggling to find work, in and outside this industry. It’s known the market su-ks and not just for tech. There are no signs of it turning around until at least 2025, and likely later.
@1fiv+1s9WeovZ Ok then talk to the people laid off last June, November, and December. Who of them are employed yet, 5 months to a year later?
@1egv+ nike is not google come on...its known fact that its very difficult for googlers to find job outside. they have to get in in FAAANG or MAANG only because of the kind of perks involved.
The job market stinks and we are in a really tough election year. Job market will stay bad until at least 2025.
Bonus in august is eligible. Nothing from that is guaranteed. If you take it and it takes 12-14 months to find a job, you would still earn more taking the demotion and continuing to look.
If it’s ruining your health, take medical leave. Some medical leaves will be protected.
@1vym I think you all forgot to read the part where I said one year of service. And the 4 months isn’t including the bonus in August, and unemployment. Again, I’m not saying it’s not a risk. I’m not saying they’ll find work by then. But the job market will turn eventually. And if this job is ruining your health, you have a decision to make.
I know someone laid off from Nike last June who’s still looking. Worked for Nike for a while and has landed hundreds of patents for multiple companies and still can’t find work.
@1qnh who says the job market is turning around in a year. I have friends laid off from google going on 14 months with no job.
@1qnh+1s9WeovZ 4 months isn’t nearly enough in this market. Talk to people who have been laid off in the last year. I know exceptional talent who can’t even land contract roles.
6-9 months is lucky.
@1yiq I was offered a demotion or severance after one year of service and it’s enough to carry me 4 months not considering unemployment. I can imagine those with more years of service could survive a year until the job market turns around. Yes, it’s a risk. Not saying it’s not. But at what point does your health and wellness matter more? When it’s too late?

Quit now and get a fat check and two months of pay or quit later and get nothing? Idk. The idea of staying while looking for another job doesn’t make sense to me.
Take the demotion … collect a pay check and do nothing. It will take them time to figure out you are doing nothing because nobody will know what anyone is supposed to be doing. You can at least get paid while you look for a job.
Sure it’s better but at that point you might as well look for a job anyways on the outside. I guess it buys you time. They’ve shown what they think of you.
