Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Winning isn't for everyone?

I don't know... it didn't click. In today's world, the message in the ad fell short. It sounded aggressive. And most important: we're about to start the olympics, where a lot of it is about union, it's about coming together. Am I alone here?

I liked "Leave Nothing" and "Find Your Greatness" (by using Nike products). This ad seemed to be less inviting for everyone to buy. Nike is just for the elite, everyone else should buy Under Armour or Addidas.

It’s a weird brand anthem to rally behind given how bad Nike is losing right now

"Winning isn't for everyone" and then "My dream is to end yours"...
That' just poor sportsmanship talk. If you were a real athlete that was all about doing your best with mamba mentality, you'd say things more along the lines of "I'm the best and I will win". Then "good game".
Not this BS.

Ha! “Jokic mentality” person here. To clarify, I’m absolutely not saying this would make for a good ad - it’d be terrible! All I’m saying is the competitive spirit is not something that ever resonated with me, so naturally the ad didn’t resonate. But like I said, great cut.
On another note, this was no reference to his horses or whatever. It was more to explain that you don’t need to vocally appear as a 24/7, “I live for my work” type of hu----r to actually be good at your job. This is irrelevant to the Nike ads, and more relevant to what an unhealthy extent many among us identify with their job. Take a breather…

Oh, I assumed it was a message from SLT to employees! It is an ad?!?

@1pmo+1tBRBhPx Our PSP stinks?

Dude! We just got 60% for sh!tting the bed the last 12 months.

Technically, no company that performs this badly should be rewarded with bonuses.

"Am I a bad person?"
no, but obviously a bad ad exec.
This has to be one of the worst Nike ads ever. There is no excitement, no energy, no grit, no connection with the consumer. It's just flashes of (mostly previous) athletes Nike has endorsed. I was almost surprised they didn't include Lance Armstrong.
Nothing about the ad says "we are the best - you want to be with us because our product is better".

I love this campaign. Yes it is aggressive. That is the point.

This campaign is terrible. At a time our stock is down, our psp stinks, no real raises are happening: I guess we are looking in the mirror saying, "Winning isn't for everyone."

Expected more
But I think Nike is always expected to do more in product and marketing versus other brands
And this just didn’t

Thanks Phil. JD…while leading the stock price to the lowest in almost 10 years, laid off about 2000 people that cared.
MP needs to come back. ES needs to come back. MS needs to come back. TP was a good move. JD needs to go far far away. Dr M needs to go far far away.

I wish it would have been Olympics focused with current athletes. I was surprised to see Kobe but then also current athletes who are about to compete in the Olympics.

I mean... the message would have resonated it if we had a successful quarter... After several consecutive quarters that were not great and after the very recent decline in stock price, this message is kind of laughable! Wasn't the strongest come back

HOLY crow... all the people on this thread who are f'ing snowflakes.... we are a sports company, we are about winning. we are not about unity and kumbaya. Embrace mamba, be maniacal as Serena... this is the kind of energy we need back.

all you people who are questioning this... you shouldn't be part of the future of Nike.

The missing ingredient is a relevant, recognizable and likable winning athlete. A MJ or a Tiger…

Instead we for
Kobe, RIP
Serena, Retired
LeBron, not known for a ki-ler instinct.. the opposite actually
Shacarri.. never won anything
Wemby… too soon
Mbappe.. ok
The rest I don’t know

The ad would have hit better if Nike was actually winning… instead it rings too close to home. Winning isn’t for JD, that’s for sure and not for our ELT either. This explains why we’re forecasting decline and Adi is forecasting gains because winning isn’t for everyone.

Mamba mentality, ‘best don’t rest’, this ad… all are things that don’t resonate with me. Jokic mentality is my jam. But whatever, I like my job and get paid well, I don’t need to agree on this type of competitive spirit. Nice video work though.

Didn’t resonate with me either. I know the Olympics are the elite, but very much fails to inspire the everyday gen-z athlete (our target consumer). This was the strategic focus when I worked in women’s 3 years ago when the org first started but the pendulum is seemingly shifting back to the serving the elite. The spot seems like a major fumble in speaking to the kids we need to buy our product. Crazy Dream was a best in class example of threading that needle.

Eh, it was at least something! Certainly not the best, but it’s reminiscent of old ads. Does feel bit like they took the old formula but there’s still some magic ingredient missing. Which is exactly what Nike feels like these days, a rehash of the old stuff but without that special je nes sais quoi

I loved it. Message is not everyone has what it takes. You are the hunter or the hunted. We lives in a world where everyone gets a trophy and feelings matter. People get butthurt and instead of being better they run to therapy. It is refreshing.

People may not like it…but winning isn’t for everyone

Horrible message! Sounds awful . I read a post on LinkedIn from a former employee who is apparently very passionate about brand. His suggestion for the message was (bet on yourself)

It's great that we're back to embracing the machismo that made Nike iconic, but I agree that the team unity aspect is missing making the message feel off. Sport isn’t just about winning or losing, it’s about winning or losing as a team. That’s something which leadership within this company fails to understand as well… not the best message imo

Wining isn’t for Nike anymore, this tone deaf ad shows they have lost the only thing that made the brand what it was. Nike’s marketing went from the penthouse to the poorhouse in record time.
