Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Young people shouldn't be staying here for more than a few years

Old-timers like myself who are nearing retirement are stuck but you're not. Use this place as a stepping stone for something better. As bad as it is to work for, Nike still carries some weight on a resume. Use it while you still can. You don't want to be stuck here with no future prospects for too long.

@1kgc - don't worry about burning bridges, the people in Nike who pretend to have any control over your career don't carry any weight outside of the org. Don't let them guilt trip you in to staying at the company.

@2wbi

Same for if you're an ETW and have been on the same team for more than a year without getting converted. You're not being a hero.

If you enter stretch assignment territory get out fast! It’s just a wat to make you do more work without the rewards and in the end there is nothing.

Take it from someone who left Nike and started looking for work with smaller companies - they know how big of a sh*t show Nike is and that people don't typically have a lot to show for the time they were there. Don't walk into interview thinking you can BS your way into a job just because you worked at Nike.

There has always been reorgs, but most the time they haven't been as bloody as the last 3 years have been. 2018 was a total carnage. The "secret" layoff meetings held behind papered up windows. Folks that had been at Nike almost their whole career, many of whom that had 15-20 years with the company were let go. A disproportionately high number of older (and probably expensive) employees with a token amount of young people in the group to help defend against ageism suits. We lost a few good ones in 2020 too.

Staying with one company opens the door for exploitation.. The benefits have been slowly eroding away. No raises during covid. No profit sharing in the 401k the last few years. I don't see them reversing it after we get used to it, and it will not be long before they move onto something else to take away. The reorgs will never end as they never get it right. There is very limited upward mobility.

Never stop looking for the next job. You won't find job security here. They will remorselessly cast you aside when you are no longer profitable. But if you can make the cut, a few years at Nike could look good on the resume.

I feel like I’d struggle in most jobs after being in this black ho-e for 7 years. The first few were fine as I had an actual team and good leader. The last 5 or so feel like a blur or never ending reorgs, meetings that should have been an email, to set up the next meetings that are just the same, and pontificating on goals that will never happen due to the constant turnover of resources. I was hoping I’d get shitcanned during the CDA but there’s always next time, right?

Thank you for this feedback. I’ve been at Nike for 2- 3 years and I came in with so much working knowledge. As I’ve continued working here I’ve stacked my skills up against similar positions outside of Nike I’m realizing I’m already out of touch!

It’s a balance of not wanting to burn bridges but also not wanting to lose my advanced skillset.
