Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Heard about Layoff at IBM

I heard from my colleague at IBM that a layoff is coming. Has anyone heard the same, or is it just a hoax? After the Oracle layoff, everyone on my project is worried.

@1h2 Yes "dude" DEI is sick and IBM is the sickest of all DEI promoters. I have a DREAM "dude" and you and your hiring by skin color and age and race is not and never will be in it. People like you turned turned IBM into a dumpster fire that smells like the worst slum in India. I would not trust anyone at IBM to clean my toilet bowl.

See the new post where IBM just paid $17M to settle a DOJ DEI case. Should have been $17B. IBM Pays $17 Million to Resolve Allegations of Discrimination Through Illegal DEI Practices

@13c fear, conformism, opportunism, hypocrisy, or the optimism of reason (as long as it lasts, one survives).. all of them. Who knows?!

@12x why does no one call them out on this BS. We all know what they are doing and how they perverted the system (pip) and we-ponized it. We all know it. They know it. But in the office no one utters a word about its true nature. Everyone just nods their head and agrees. Outside of work everyone speaks of its true nature. It’s so bizarre

@12x I left a week ago and before I left I was hoping to be laid off because I was so scared of pip.

@12q silly goose. IBM has PERFECTED layoffs since 1993. So much so they have used RA for 4 decades. Layoffs get some much state and federal scrutiny. Much better to just batter IBM people mentally hour after hour and put them in the PIP sausage grinder. Leave quietly with no muss no fuss no severance. Did you see the Easter Bunny too?

Absolutely no layoffs going to occur in 2026 but RTO will

Precisely - total worldwide headcount is irrelevant and actually misleading.

Since 2022 IBM has laid off nearly 30k people from the US which had a headcount of around 60k then. But because of constant acquisitions, they keep replenishing the population before laying off older employees in new rounds.

It is hard to know what the current headcount is because of this but while it is true they have laid off 50% of the US workforce since 2022 due to constant purchases, the headcount still remains over 30k or even higher.

But never ever use their worldwide population in any calculation unless you want to be lied to. It literally means the opposite of what they pretend.

Even if the headcount remains stable, you need to pay attention to offshoring and SW acquisitions as they impact legacy employees in NA and Northern Europe
Example 1 = If IBM buys a SW company with 2k worth of employees and has a layoff or offshore of 2k of legacy employees what happened? Net headcount is flat but 2 k of legacy employees were shown the door (SW employees come on board and legacy employees are shown the door)
Example 2 = If IBM offshores 2k worth of employees but hires 2k worth of Indian employees what happened? Net headcount is flat but 2k of legacy employees were shown the door and IBM saved money on salaries
NOW let’s look at IBM history.
In 2024 worldwide headcount went down 12k even with SW acquisitions and offshoring taking place
In 2025 worldwide headcount went down 6k even with SW acquisitions and offshoring taking place
In 2026 IBM has already pre-announced 7k worth of layoffs are going to happen (eg expect 2026 restructuring expenses to be the same as 2025)
Given the above “fact” it says legacy employees are going to get hit yet again.
So where do legacy employees live? YEP NA and Northern Europe
Net net IBM headcount will decrease 6-8k in 2026 with IBM NA and Northern Europe legacy employees absorbing the cuts

@qq oh, really ? then take a look at this article from MSN and say that IBM is still hiring like crazy (in India, of course)

@ep I wouldn't trust Alvind to sit the right way on a toilet seat, let alone believe any statement from him that there will be no layoffs at IBM during 2026. Where there's a will, there's a way to layoff employees and put them on PIPs etc. IBM is no longer a company run by ethical management. And it starts at the top ....with Alvind.

I’m sure there might be some level of layoffs, but there is no spring layoffs in the same way there is usually.

At least that’s what I’ve heard from someone in HR.

@cz I thought the one who keeps saying Albany is safe is sarcastic and means just a select few at Albany are safe (the elite crowd that can do nothing all day and yet never be marked low performers or laid off),

The management team during the 4th q earnings call already pre-announced layoffs in 2026. They said they would be similar to 2025 numbers, so approx 8k worldwide given the 700 million dollar 2025 charge. To the poster who says Albany is safe. HA I don’t know what you are smoking, but no one in IBM is safe, and that goes double for USA and Northern Europe employees due to their great costs.

Wowser, IBMers, I think I'd feel awfully unmotivated going to my IBM workspace on a Monday morning after a nice weekend, a holiday for some, with RAs rumored and looming, to work on some silly project that neither I nor my coworkers really believe in, all to pad the pockets of a dishonest CEO and other money hungry executives. Boy that would stink. I'd have my GTD next actions all ready for the week, or my kanban doing cards, or maybe just a traditional to-do list, but gosh I'd just feel so depressed I doubt I could even get through my email. Boy, boy, boy, I'd sure hate to be going to my IBM job on a Monday morning. I'd think there has to be a better way.
