I wasn’t laid off, I had to leave for personal reasons and somehow landed multiple offers in companies bigger than Nike - working for one right now.

I loved my Nike role. Am I happier now? Too early to tell. But here’s some scattered thoughts:

  • I have worked at MAANG before and like last time, my new coworkers are all quite brilliant. At Nike that was a hit or miss.
  • Some say having Nike on your resume is a negative. Not in my case, but I do not enjoy small companies or startups. Nike is such a well recognized brand that it will mostly create positive impressions for other corporate jobs.
  • Startups DO NOT want me either, it’s mutual. Getting in the interview pipeline with G or A or M from MAANG? Easy. Getting there with a startup? That’s a never for me…
  • I have a lot more work now. Can be good, can be bad, time will tell.
  • Base pay and total comp are much higher.
  • Interviews for big places are so structured that you literally just need to STUDY. That’s it. Many of these places don’t even ask you much about what you’ve done. They like hiring for potential and way of thinking.
  • The hardest part is getting the attention of the recruiter. A referral that doesn’t personally ping the recruiter or hiring manager will probs do nothing. Applying SUPER EARLY is much more important. Apply and then still ping your contact, if you have one.

I’ll let you know in a few months if I’m happier :))

@1gz if it isn't in writing it isn't real... you think a lawyer or a judge would take that hearsay as gospel?

I was told that if I took new employment before my lay off term date (9/5) that I was essentially resigning and wouldn't receive my severance. It's a double edged sword and this stipulation is no where in the offboarding docs (of course).

If you are grade 45+, Nike is the great and life is good. Low stress and high pay > 300K.
For those 40 and below in tech, you would be better off elsewhere. You don't get RSU's and pay is peanuts for the amount of work you do.

From people I know who have been laid off in the last year, tech or otherwise, most of them are finding work albeit often for substantially less total compensation.

I know three people who went from total comp of $250k+/year at Nike to literally half that amount. When you work at Nike it’s easy to forget that most employers don’t offer stock options and some of the other lucrative trappings of a nearly $50B Fortune 500 company. This is why, unfortunately, for more than a few people who get laid off Nike will have been the peak of their career.

I retired after 34 years and right before the 3rd major layoff and reorg. I do very very selective private gigs as a private contractor but AM MUCH happier than the last 5-7 years or so of the huge company, MGMT and culture downfall.

@a5

I am praying that you get hired someplace soon.
The pay will be good, and the work environment one where you are comfortable and content.

Try different things (with your resume, job search, etc.) other than what you've been doing so far, to land a position. Try this site: https://builtin.com/jobs/remote/finance?country=USA&searcharea=5mi&allLocations=true

I have faith that you'll be hired soon!

F.Y.I: Those who are much happier have turned the page and therefore will not be looking at this website. They just moved on.
