Does anyone else have a dotted line reporting structure? Presently, I find myself having to handle the incompetence of two individuals instead of just one. The existence of dotted line reporting seems utterly nonsensical. It brings to mind the age-old adage, "One lies and the other swears by it!"

Before you know, we will have a dozen of dotted lines and will be reporting to too many masters. We will be abused 24/7 with impossible workloads and impossible deadlines. Our performance reviews will be filled with a ton of complaints and criticisms from multiple managers for not meeting deadlines.
Dotted line reports are individuals who attempt to emulate effective managerial styles while concealing their lack of knowledge and complete ineptness.
I'll never take a job with a dotted line "manager" again. I've done it once or twice and the dotted line "manager" was always terrible.
Love it!
most lines of business have dotted lines into respective risk orgs.
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other...practical & literal for all times.
Our dotted line report just received a new title that is less desirable. I would guess there will no longer be dotted line reporting by the new year.
dotted lines you say? my problem is my tech manager along with 3 other dotted lines to my LOB are all above competent. but their perspectives vary. Each has a different level of what is a priority and what is urgent.
think of it like the movie office space where the main character complains about having multiple managers asking if he completed his TPS reports.
