Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

To all of you in Tech….

…losing your sh-t because you have to RTO, all of us NON-TECH people have been saying it and saying it and saying it. Why didn’t you believe anyone? What made you guys think Saul was gonna save you?

As a soon to be tech org person again I've been kind of looking forward to going back. Now, hopefully COVID doesn't go nuts when we all go back. That's cause all sorts of other issues.

No need to slow anything down; I’ve got analytical skills. My point was that if most in tech get exceptions to continue to WFH then that actually makes RTO more of a suggestion than a requirement.

I’m totally sympathetic to the situation but I’m not in tech and remember pre Covid hearing a lot of chatter about tech having to abide by a strict hub location strategy (before it became a broader company initiative) and that anyone who wouldn’t/couldn’t got let go. It felt odd over the last few months to hear all of the comments about RTO not applying to tech. Typically a 180 isn’t actually a 180 when the dust settles.

Totally understand the frustration there. It’s not cool to be led to believe one thing only to flip last minute.

My focus was really on the people who seemed to essentially be saying eh doesn’t really matter what was communicated because many are getting exceptions anyway.

@1nxg I think the point is that everyone not being lied to by our manager and with plenty of experiences where they have done this before, have been telling everyone on this board that you guys are going back. I literally posted on here multiple times that i was FT WFH years ago before covid and with a contract and they tore it up in my face out of the blue. ZERO WARNING. Anyone with a clue has been saying,”you tech ppl will go in too. Managers are lying” and you didn't believe. That goes for tech and non-tech. Now who’s the jerk, jerk?

This isn't an, “I told you so,” it’s a, “why did you believe SvB…ever??” Especially knowing they are in layoff mode. I took IT for smart people.

Had to drop some truth when a man living paper weight starts throwing around the c-word

Imagine sitting in those chairs playing on their phone all day for almost a decade, but then telling people with real jobs to suck it up. Absurdity at its finest

You’re less useful than the security gates you get paid to sit and watch all day, because the gates can actually physically stop someone from moving. You literally have no power other than calling the real police. You’re a human being pretending to be a ring doorbell, but a thousand times less functional.

I’ll use small words for you to help you understand Mr Security Guard:

Your job doesn’t use your brain. Your job is to be a body sitting in a chair. You have to be physically there. You are paid to be furniture.

As a “displaced” 5-rated FTE, I’m receiving invitations to come back as contract labor when my 6-month sit out is over. RTO date changes are a game to a.) cause some % of workers to get angry and leave, or b.) force those who cannot RTO off the payroll. Either way, the attrition rates improve and $mm are saved.

@1uid+1ecXtFzk accepting an hourly job onsite is different than accepting a salaried position that was posted as remote. A lot of salaried engineers need to work day and night, following change management requirements. It doesn't make sense to go in the office a full-day, then drive home and get connected again, just to implement your changes.

Let me try to slow it down for you?

Tech had been told about coming RTO for along time like everyone else. Then just a couple weeks ago at the Tech Town Hall, the head of Tech reversed RTO. Now today that was reversed again.

I'm a security guard at a significant WF facility.
I'm a Wells Fargo security guard.
I've been to my 'office' every day since 2012.

It's not just Tech folks... there were plenty of other groups continually told to not worry. That it didn't apply to us. Then we got the.. golly, sorry... how were we to know B.S.
Try to understand that things happen outside your experience and quit knee-jerk (jerk being the operative word) judging people.

As a life-long Non-Tech person, I have to agree with the OP.
I've been RTO'd actually 3 separate times since March '20 - and each time was different and pretty exhausting mentally, physically, psychologically.
Have to lighten up, fluff.
There's always a risk when you walk out of the front door.
Or the shower in your bathroom

3 separate times I have been returned to office and I've survived.
Would the company have survived if I wasn't here to lick the glue on your paycheck envelopes? I mean that literally.
I'm an Envelope Stuffer. 25 years. Proud.

It’s all about the Benjamins, don’t ever forget that. This company talks out of both sides of his mouth. On one hand you have the climate change champions that are dedicated to lowering carbon emissions while also saying everybody has to come back into the office everybody has to contribute to global warming now we were against global warming but now we’re for it.

So now that everyone is comfortable working from home, the bank makes a profit, during a pandemic, now it makes perfect sense to reverse that and go 180° backwards.

In what universe does that make any fu----g sense, unless some money is to be made. People are mad af. They’ll leave, and wf will just hire a contractor to fill your spot.

They want out of the FTE methodology, and hire ppl with no benefits, just bodies they are responsible for except their pay. No PTO, No health care. No retirement. Use you then yeet after your contract is up.

Someone please tell me my assessment is wrong, and then tell me what the RTO really is all about.

I’m all ears!

@spd He clearly did loosen it. They just walked it back. I went back and listened to the replay to make sure I wasn’t crazy. It’s lousy enough to go back into the office but I hope they don’t try to gaslight us at the next town hall. We all heard it.

@lnq+1ecXtFzk

Yes. SOP has been for tech in office. To WFH, you need an exception approved by Saul.

The problem is many in tech, who do not have exceptions, thought Saul was loosening RTO in a recent Townhall. Turns out, that is not the case. Those who did not apply for or were not granted exceptions are now upset.

I thought maybe someone in leadership had a “come to Jesus” moment and realized that any worthwhile technical resource can find a full time telecommuting job in a hot minute. I’m just annoyed that I have to stick around for my bonus and go to interviews. I love coding and I know another company will pay me to do it from home even if WF won’t.

I’m not taking sides here but if you have to get an exception to WFH doesn’t that mean the SOP for the broader tech group is to RTO? Maybe exceptions are more widely approved in tech, but the fact that it’s an exception by definition means the outcome is not typical or standard….
