Thread regarding Fiserv Inc. layoffs

I feel trapped here

I made a huge mistake of locking myself into a position (let me rephrase that, of letting them lock me into a position) that is basically the end of my career. If I were to change jobs, I'd have to go for an entry-level position whatever I'd decide to do, and I can't afford that. Be careful not to make the same mistake I did.

You aren't alone. There are many of us that have 20+ years and are very specialized in the same sinking ship with you. Many looking but changing careers in your 50's is a terrifying feeling.

Don't give up, see if you can transfer your skills to another field. I left earlier this year b/c of work-life balance, just being tired and lack of company direction. I'm working in a new field with less pay right now, but gaining new skills for future growth. I don't regret leaving and had my family's support.

@1fcl+1uj48nmS Wow how we could use that specific technical expertise now at Fiserv…..sinking ship without it.

The current job market is abysmal - try and hang in until you find another position. Perhaps the election will have a positive effect - but even that is doubtful. Best to you, friend.

Sorry to hear it. The absolute worst, today more than ever, is to develop company-specific expertise that has no to low applicability elsewhere. Although that might not be the situation you are dealing with, for many who chose to serve companies such as this one for an extended period of time and whose knowledge capital grew accordingly, the very thing that made them valuable became a huge disadvantage when they got laid off and had to find another job (because, sadly, their company-specifc expertise was worth nothing).
