Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

The list of laid off positions was posted

On July 1 Nike filed the list of eliminated positions on the Oregon WARN website. A few things that stood out to me:

  • Many Senior Director and Director positions were eliminated. I didn’t count but it looks like about 20+ VP’s also got the boot.
  • Senior Administrative Assistants took the single biggest hit with 22 jobs eliminated.
  • Seemed to me that a lot of data and analytic positions were eliminated. That isn’t my world so I don’t know what to make of it.
  • Certain areas of the business that have historically been immune to layoffs didn’t escape this time.
  • As to be expected some of the positions made sense and some left me scratching my head. I saw several roles that caused me to ask “Isn’t that role kinda sorta important?” I guess not.
  • Overall there seemed to be an emphasis on higher paying roles. Which makes morbid sense if the goal is to cut costs.
  • I saw several cut roles that made me think “There would be a lot of people working under that person. I wonder what the downstream impact is?” I could clearly see a significant amount of confusion around roles with some of these cuts.

Interesting to see so many Supply Chain roles in footwear and apparel, especially since the leader for apparel is still there, the previous leader for footwear got promoted to lead all of sustainability, and of course VA still remains. Guess it was the SDs and Directors that caused all of the issues in apparel and footwear in Supply Chain. I'm sure the teams that remain are happy and have clarity in what their work and the new org structure goals (insert huge laugh and grin because we all know that is not true!).

Also quite a few pregnant women and women who had recently given birth. Nice job, Nike.

There were 4 Executive Assistants laid off as well. One of them was on medical accommodations and recovering from being paralyzed. I feel so bad for her.
Nike should be ashamed

@1hri let’s be clear, MM has her fingers in all of the pots. Don’t think for a second she didn’t have influence over layoffs in other departments.. Remember, her HR Leadership team was directly responsible for ensuring other organizations met their targets. She’s the head of HR, if she wants you gone, you’ll be gone.

Don’t trust the list. My title was listed wrong - most likely on purpose to make it seem like it wasn’t cutting an important role.

ER is not under HR. It’s under Legal. Nothing to do with MM. it’s a much smaller group now that most were split off to People Solutions (which IS under HR), obviating the role.

that's because this list in only WHQ employees that were laid off. remote people that were laid off won't see themselves on this list which is why you don't see a lot of HR people on here. many of them were remote and any of them were let go prior to phase 1 and 2. HR has been silently letting go of people since early 2023.

And our directors that are clueless are now having the team work twice as much without a salary increase or nothing. But they do take credit for getting the job done.

@1abq+1tkjUMaV You will find something better than Nike. I am sure in a few years you look back and realize it was a blessing. Yes it su-ks right now but there will be a job for you out there. Do not give up. Keep looking

Yeah it's typical to cut the tenured employees cos their pay grade is maxed out, and if they have no connections to higher leadership. They don't care about institutional knowledge or nike experience or expertise.
Then they higher someone with no nike experience from a much lesser company, and everyone else gets to chip in extra to carry that person for years.
During the previous cuts, my senior director didn't even know what projects belonged to the person who they laid off. During one meeting she was like, ok there's all these projects that seem stalled, and we need some people to pick them up. And we were all like, uhhh yeah the person you just laid off could be doing all of them super efficiently thanks.

I was laid off and I still don’t understand why. My salary was modest by Nike standards ($105k) and I got along with everyone. I wasn’t in any of the scandalous departments. I guess I’ll never know.

Many on this list were paid competitively while not maxing out their grade. The 'usually immune' departments were hit because of their leadership's criminal behavior.

Interesting to see only a handful of HR roles … Dir of Employee Relations … he/she must have seen something and said something. Must have been on MM’s bad side, or maybe they tried to out one of her favorite directs reports for their inappropriate behavior?

Good news is with all the impact on GPS there will be nobody to analyze badge swipes so maybe we can continue to pretend to come to the office.

@msa I saw that happen in 2017. A 10+ year member of my team making a $140k salary was let go. We rehired for the exact same position within six months at $85k. While making more money is always nice anyone who is making near the top of their pay range needs to consider that as a potential liability when the layoff hammer drops.

And they are now posting many of these same roles to fill. What a total sm--k in the face to those of us laid off. I could never trust Nike again after all of this.
