Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

National bosses day

Don't forget everyone, its national bosses day. While employees are faced with WFRs, little to no raises, no promotions, evolving job responsibilitiesand last years RSU bonuses are worth considerably less than what they were issued at. Make sure to give your boss a thank you.

Because HP is "out of money", my administrative assistant asked our team to contribute to a basket of "goodies" for our boss. An absolute slap in the face and frankly embarrassing.

"But... at the end of the day the more senior you are, the more your comp is variable, and in bad years you are going to feel it much more vs. "normal" years."

Tell that to Enrique and his cronies and they will laugh in your face. They will get "guaranteed" pay in the millions one way or another, often by stealing from employees in one way or another.

Ehh.... middle management actually takes one of the biggest hits during leaner times as much of total comp is based on variable pay vs guaranteed salary and most of that in bonus target. If you complain to your boss that your bonus su-ks... more than likely theirs su-ks more relative to expectations.

Now at a certain level most of the variable pay shifts from bonus to equity and equity awards usually take less of a hit vs bonus in bad years - both because the can is kicked down the road a bit and to make people personally invested in improving share price.

But... at the end of the day the more senior you are, the more your comp is variable, and in bad years you are going to feel it much more vs. "normal" years.

Probably an unpopular opinion here but I think L5/L6 managers are okay for the most part. It’s anyone that’s L4 or above that really leaves a bad taste in my mouth about HP. They often argue and yell at each other and then play reverse psychology when you ask them difficult questions during an all-hands meeting.

Agree with my comment below that there are some bootlickers in L5/L6 management but most of them from my experience are usually pretty empathetic with their team members.

Ever since I left HP a few years ago, I tell myself that I was glad to work for my manager but I wasn’t glad to work for HP. He didn’t play into the political nonsense that occurs there and actually listened to my feedback about our team’s strategy for the organization. L4 and above just pretends to like you until something bad happens then they will interrogate you like you’re testifying in court and wonder why you can’t cut costs on a product.

I still see my old manager on LinkedIn pictures from time to time. Hope he’s doing well.

"Honestly, most of the bosses do their very best to protect and elevate their teams, but they are given no budget or capacity to carrey on that. So even if you don't thank your boss, give them some grace."

Not really. Most bosses are protecting their bootlickers when it comes to WFR while giving the boot to some of the best remaining employees. HP has become way too political, and talent and dedication don't matter like they used to.

That is why the company can't really innovate anymore due to the herd mentality and inbreeding that it has created. So the CEO and his cronies borrow money and buy companies to show growth (look at Poly).
