Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

More layoffs next week

Corp R&D plus marketing folks. Not sure of numbers yet but this info comes from VP whose team is affected, plus an HR person with direct knowledge.

Not a joke. "Next week", not "this week"

What groups and titles are getting laid off? How many?

Just for fun, go check out how many people roll up to Dan Sullivan, your HR Czar. So that I don't waste all of your time...it's 981. I just thought that number was a bit astronomical.

Humanoid Resources. They are like humans but in that uncanny valley, with a giant void where a normal person's empathy center is. Some fake it well.

Yup, layoffs being announced as I type this. Small enough numbers to avoid WARN again. But they're picking them off, little by little, like lions attacking antelope herds, getting the weak and the old first. After today's Samsung chip news, next round will likely move into planning stage. Very sad for all, except the fat, lazy management and HR that don't think twice about what they're doing to families.

Yes, you can file a grievance, but by the time you are done you have drained your savings and no one else will hire you. The deck is stacked against working folks.

@ 52589: As I understand it, an employer can terminate an employee for economic reasons, but can't manufacture "cause" by deliberately targeting (or having managers target) individuals whose work is otherwise satisfactory for downgrading on reviews that will determine if the employee is terminated. If what you say is true, you might want to consider filing a claim with the federal EEOC or under CA's FEHA. You can fill out the forms online. Initial cost is FREE. In person appointment may be necessary. One of these agencies will investigate. Retaliation against an employee who lodges an official complaint is unlawful. There is a time limit for filing: 180 days federal/300 days state from the date of the termination or unlawful act.

Shakespeare had the right idea: "Firs let's (lay off) all the lawyers!"

I wish they would lay people off in my area. But instead they force managers to send out letters of expectations to employees who are doing a decent job. Then on to a PIP (performance Improvement Plan) and offer a "package" (typically 3 months pay) if they will resign rather than force management to go through the arduous job of documenting their failures on the PIP, which is designed such that the goals are incredibly difficult or impossible to meet. Then fire them after destroying their self-confidence. What a wonderful environment to work in.

Did (s)he tell you about the layoff in confidence?

Intel has layoffs on a regular basis. It's just how they cut the fat.

Is it Malenkov’s new year resolution to lose fat?

QUALCOMM doesn't have a culture of layoffs like Cisco and other companies which lay off people on regular basis. so they are trying to get rid of people other ways to avoid confrontation because the employees are not used to that kind of environment. it is more psychological than anything else....but over the years QUALCOMM has accumulated too much fat....

Is there a source(s) for the total layoffs, official and unofficial? It seems that QC is trying very hard to offload headcounts.

Under whose authority?

they don't need a WARN...they will tell people to resign willingly and give them 3months time to do so.....also many people who are supposed to go will be put on Performance improvement plan.... basically paving the way for them to go ....

WARN is bad for the reputation of the company so they will do it diplomatically

Will this notification be big enough to trigger the WARN act?

Remove useless 'employee relations' (ER) under HR.

I was refering to corp R&D, R&D in general is the engine

R&D is not useless.

HR on the other hand - might as well replace them all with an app that is just a random platitude generator.

True story. Marketing is being affected big time now. Layoffs happening.

I believe this 100% - R&D is usleless, most initiatives suck big time. Marketing is not safe due to limited amount of work by mgt staff and managers.
