Senior Engineer here, 6 years at QCOM. I have an offer from Intel, ~7% pay bump (overall), everything else is pretty much the same. Direct hire. Would have to move. No kids, no family here in SD, would have to move up North. What are your thoughts? Pros? Cons?

If you are 25-35, measure your salary in take-home square footage of housing per year. In san Diego, houses in a good school district cost about $350 a square foot (Carmel Valley). In the Bay Area, it's $1100 a square foot (for a place like Palo Alto). So a 7% pay raise is probably a huge salary cut. I came from Q to Northern CA, but I had a 40%+ pay raise to do it, and we are living small.
@078 Intel does not provide 401K matching for any employees. What it does provide is a contribution starting at 6 % irrespective of whether the employee contributes or not.
Santa Clara : Consider a cost of living rise of 10 %. Personally, I don't like Santa Clara that much
Hillsboro : Although taxes are same, the cost of living is way less according to my friends there working at Intel and Nvidia. It does Rain a lot ! But, I have been to Portland and it is really a fun city. Lots of activities to do, great people and restaurents, beer etc.
Again if you are getting a grade 7 - grade 8 position at Intel, the overall returns would be higher than Qualcomm for sure.
If I would have been in your position and unhappy with the current alotted work, I would have gone for this offer.

SD is gambling on one employer QC, in the bay area you will have many choices and you can move around quickly until you settle on what you like
Phoenix that is the Chandler area, you could consider. Much lower cost of living and schools are pretty good. Of course you would need to tolerate the 120 degree summers. Hillsboro absolutely not. Out its not even Portland.About 50 miles away. Trust me, I lived for 4 years in Seattle and unless you are born and raised there, the lack of sun will affect your mood and make you miserable.
Moving to where? Hillsboro OR or Pheonix AZ? Take it. Either one is less than living in SD, and will afford a buffer from the impending layoffs. Do it.
7% would be a pay cut for you. You're moving to a more expensive area. QC has great benefits which you're not accounting.

A bad offer. At least a 15% to 18% raise will be par considering your rent will be so much more. Intel does not have 401K match for new employees and benefits are quite a bit worse especially medical. I turned down an offer from Intel, but I work for Qualcomm in the Bay Area and they offered me 3% more to move locally.
7% total comp bump? How do you know that?
