Thread regarding Becton Dickinson & Co. layoffs

BD Layoffs 2015

I heard that we may have reorganization on the IT side and that some groups will be merged. This will impact managers and staff as well. I am not saying BD will have layoffs in 2015 but it looks like a reorg is almost certain. If that happens, make sure you are covered, work hard, contribute and of course, pray.

Perhaps it is time we formed the first IT union. Main objective, STOP LETTING CORPORATIONS ABUSE THE H1B VISA PROGRAM AND HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR BREAKING THE LAW!

First accounts payable was outsourced with GenPact, now IT with HCL.

I really wish the Department of Labor would do their job and enforce the H-1B and L-1B visa rules. Replacing American workers who won't work for below market pay is NOT a valid reason for replacement.

IT is just the beginning. Now that they've essentially cut the cord and can avoid paying a higher wage and benefits they will continue to replace skilled American workers. What's considered core?

It's a myth that companies can save money by outsourcing...... According to court papers after Molina had fired the Americans and replace them with H1B employees, they had increased its labor costs, between 144% to 180%...... Paying more in labor costs is a common outcome of displacement because the outsourcing company must significantly increase it's body count in order to reach the productivity of the more skilled Americans they have fired......

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/01/16/1055249/-Discrimination-Lawsuit-May-Crush-H1-b-Practice-of-Training-Our-Foreign-Replacements ..........................................

I was told BD had been warned by American vendors that BD's transition plan was un-realistic.... They say the whole plan is like "someone who does not what they are selling is lying to someone who does not know what they are buying"

Because of the H1B shortage, It is very likely these outsourcing company will use "students" to replace you guys:

When companies are undercutting an American worker just so they can increase their profits without regard to the people who made them profitable in the first place, that's not a money issue. That's a moral issue.

The warning on nobody is safe was leaked out on the 9/13 post. What surprise me is how fast BD's IT departments had deteriorated. I just hope this is not going to prompt the management to accelerate the pace of outsourcing on other IT groups, but who knows, it is always easier to blame on the out-sourer then themselves.

Maybe both Wipro and HCL will get the contract. CapGEMENI Is already In and Cognizant knocking on the door for Integration work. IT team should start looking ouside or non IT job within BD. Interesting times for BD IT...

It's also obvious that intellectual property won't be secure when you outsource to HCL and Wipro. Amazing that these decisions are made and an institution like BD will stumble in such a way. Somebody get a clue!

This plan was most likely in the works well before Pierle became CIO. The board meetings and the "Real" execs who have stood the test of time play the game for the revolving door of CIO's and CEO's. Once this fails, and it will fail, Pierle will be the odd man out, just like Natale when Everest failed. Most of his people are gone with him as well. The higher ups in IT should have taken a stand against this and at least they could have walked away knowing they did the right thing. but now they talk a good story, but will be looked at like the rest greedy people calling the shoots.

What a mess!....It is no longer a problem for the infrastructure group....The fear and hopelessness had spread to all IT departments....The managers are no longer around....All projects are stopped. There is no direction, zero productivity and nobody care....It is hard to not depress....

Don't get depressed and try to avoid the horrible workplace environment that has been created. Get ready because the best part of the show hasn't even arrived yet. The various tech and business reporters are sniffing around. That of course has raised the attention of the employment lawyers as well. There'll be bad press to entertain us and a class action to join. Pierle and his friends will go down as the guys that didn't understand what Disney did when they looked at HCL. This will make an interesting case study for the real leaders that can actually solve complex problems by insourcing. How's that ERP environment? Isn't that supposed to be a strength?

Interesting from the WWW..... (love Google..)

Pierle says his specialties include program remediation, ERP implementation (SAP & Oracle), shared services, outsourcing (finance, IT, HR, procurement and call center), solving complex problems, and “managing organizational change...

Hummm. The time has come and gone. Thought they were supposed to sign the contract on Oct.1st and we get the news then.... Why the delay? Any back door dealings going on? Or are employees bailing and someone has seen this is not what was expected...

The work environment already became poisonous. People are either upset or depress. I hope nobody is going to do crazy or violence things. If you are really upset, just take it easy. Try to work from home, most of the managers are encouraging that. If you feel you can not get over the frustration, prepare to file a lawsuit as the previous posts had suggested. You will get even and have the last laugh.

No concept of leadership and right-sourcing

Pierle is Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Becton, Dickinson & Company (BD), a leading global medical technology company based in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. He was promoted into the position in June 2014 after three years as VP, EVEREST Wave 2, Business Process and Enterprise Program Management. Pierle joined BD in February 2011 after nearly seven years at EquaTerra, a consultancy in information technology and business process transformation that is now part of KPMG. There, he was part of the leadership team that helped grow EquaTerra from less than $10 million in revenue in 2004 to more than $100 million in revenue by 2011, which led to its acquisition by KPMG. Pierle began his career in August 1989 as a Supervisor with United Parcel Service and later worked as a Financial Director at AT&T, where he served as the lead financial executive for a major outsourcing deal. He later served briefly as a Vice President at JPMorgan, where he supported the merger integration of the Global Investment Bank for technology and operations for JPMorgan’s union with Chase, before moving on to TPI in July 2001 as Project Director.

There are laws to help you on this out-sourcing nightmare. For example, if you are over 40.... "For the elderly employee laid off, an important ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court has given added protection to older workers. Elderly persons who file employment discrimination lawsuits no longer need to prove that an employer acted intentionally. It is enough that the employee can prove that the layoffs had a disparate effect on the elderly workers."..... see http://www.hg.org/article.asp?id=5969 ..... So, when the time come and BD presents you the package, ask a lot of questions and how they select the people to stay or go..... If you don't like the package, don't sign it..... Start negotiate and also threaten to sue.... In case you need to sue, BD will settle with you long before the case will need to go to the court.... Remember, you can ask any manager from BD or the outsourcing firm, such the CEO, CIO and etc, to testify in the deposition...... It will cost BD tons of disruption and legal fees to defense themselves..... BD knows that very well and this is why they are willing to "enhance" the package as a bait for you to sign.... They did not do that out of kindness.... Just a "business" need....

"Accountants at New York Life were among the first scheduled for layoffs that started in May, under a contract with Accenture. The company’s accountants found out only by accident — when Accenture managers in India mistakenly sent out a group email with a full outsourcing plan — that the Indian workers they had been training for several weeks would be taking their jobs back to India."

It's all about the bottom dollar - some top execs getting a bonus for meeting goals, and then they're gone. All infrastructure will be outrourced to Agile (whoever they are - never heard of them - and I worked for some of the more reputable firms before BD). Many more will lose their jobs between JAN-MAR... and not just IT. Carefusion outsources a LOT of support services... and it seems that BD management thinks this is a good idea.... if you think you'll get picked up by the sourcing company... HAHA! I used to work for large ones.... yeah.... that was a mixed bag back then, and tech people were at a premium... today, they can get people from Malaysia, India, Ireland, wherever... that cost a third of what you get paid. You won't get an offer. Get real. This is no longer the company that holds the Becton family values.... it's the company of GE and Carefusion that only bows down to the almighty dollar.

This says it best - and it's exactly right "This reorganization mess is a reflection of poor management and has nothing to do with whether or not the employees are engaged or high performers. Certain people ate being targeted with no explanation why. It's all who you know. The chosen will get to keep the high paying positions, or be given new opportunities and they can care less about the others. Thdy dont care how their shortsidedness effects the lives of good hardworking people. It's not personal, it's business, right?"

mixed blessing - not sure I'd want to live in the brave new world that has been created. It's not the same company anymore. The Old BD was great.. .this new thing - well, it can't ever live up to the Becton family values. Time to move on, let it die a slow death.

Any news about next plans for the functional IT, Site Manufacturing team, team? Heard the plan is to move IT out if Franklin Lakes by Fy16.

Either move them to San Antonio or have the knowledge transfer done to offshore heavy company Cognizant. Wipro Accenture.

Anonymous162283,

Contracting sucks but sometimes you have to do what you have to do, so here is my advice. Seek out recommendations from people you know to get an idea of which agencies treat their people well. Setup a linked in account and connect with a few recruiters from your area, a good recruiter will set you up with a position that is a good fit for both you and the client. I'd stay away from the offshore recruiters except as a last resort, they aren't bad people but they usually are not recruiting for the best agencies and some are hard to understand. A recruiter's job is to get money from a client, think of them like salesmen and stick to those who you can meet with face to face and look them in the eye and you should be OK.
