Can we sustain such a big corporate machine if our stores are not making more money? It seems to me that we are hiring managers to manage managers who are in charge of managers. Seriously, how much layers of approvals do we need in Corporate?

you need that many managers to decide who is to be abused out of the company and who is to be laid off. A couple could hire consultants to write a report saying Follett pays its front line employees too much. If they simply re-classify them into new titles they could pay them less. Another murder of executives could hire a few more consultants to issue a report saying front line employees enjoy benefits that are far too lavish. It takes managers to do this stuff!
