Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Follett Hammers Amazon http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/financial-reporting/article/64498-big-losses-big-questions-for-

Within its media group, which includes all content sales, total revenue rose 4 percent, including a 5 percent increase in North America, the slowest growth rates in about 20 quarters, one analyst estimated during the conference call to discuss the results. Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak attributed the relatively slow growth in North America to more textbook rentals rather than sales and to a strong third quarter for book sales in last year's third quarter that was driving in part by heavy discounting.

You got "It shows the dominant player taking control of the market and the weaker players" because it got a community college contract at San Jose Evergreen Community College and one bookstore closing in Nebraska. Yes, I agree with you that is "kicking butt" completely.

Follett still has to figure out how to make money and eventually you will run out of people to lay off.

It shows the dominant player taking control of the market and the weaker players exiting. That what happens when a market matures.

None of this shows anything except that everyone is struggling to make money on college books.

The campus bookstore is under new management. The Follet Education Group took over operations on Oct. 1 to improve the service delivery to students and faculty.

San Jose Evergreen Community College District has operated two bookstores, one on each of its campuses.

“Over the past several years, the stores have struggled to meet market demands and to provide exceptional service-delivery to the district’s students and faculty,” Douglas Smith, the vice chancellor of Administrative Services, wrote in an email. “As a result, the bookstore has not been able to remain profitable in a highly competitive and changing industry.” http://sjcctimes.com/9742/new-company-takes-bookstore/

Stadium Bookstore, long popular with Marshall University students seeking textbooks, is set to close its doors Oct. 31.

In a prepared statement, Nebraska Book Co., the national company that has operated the store for the past 10 years, confirmed its plan to close the store. The company's statement said it decides to open or close stores based “on changes in the communities we operate in.” The statement did not elaborate on what “changes” prompted the decision to close the Huntington store.
