Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

What would you do to revive Staples?

Please list the ideas here, what would be things that you would do first to ensure the company survives and turns into a great company (I think most of us here agree that we suck for both the customer and employee).

No one has taken a shit in the middle of my store... yet. I feel like I'm missing out on something. Please, disgruntled co-worker, drop a duce for the team. Dookies for everyone!

So I have to wonder what happens when these third party companies, that Staples has no direct control over, start missing deliveries and service levels decrease.

It's done. Some prudent initial moves were finally made by senior executives, but they were made too late to have an impact. When the company decided to divest itself of their cornerstone, which is the retail stores (you can call it a downsize), and try to compete with Amazon the game is all over but for the shouting. So they're either eliminating or downsizing stores (with one scenario being small, mall-sized stores with multiple kiosks) and they're getting rid of their fleet. So it's going to be, what? Warehouses loading products directly onto couriers and a significantly smaller retail presence. Clearly, the company (and by that I mean top management and the shareholders) has decided to be content with a smaller slice of the pie. The company is undertaking a conscious shrinking. The problem with that is you're either growing or you're dying. There ain't no third direction. The brand name might survive for awhile. As for senior management 'restructuring' executive compensation so as not to have it tied into the company's performance, it's a nice way for those at the top to cash out while the company continues to flounder in a downward spiral, and tells you all you need to know: senior management has surrendered the fight and conceded that the company is dying (although I'm sure they would tell market analysts the company is just 'evolving'). It's the equivalent of the captain of the sinking ship making sure he gets off first. It happened with Enron, Bear Stearns and on and on. Sadly, this hasn't been uncommon across the broad range of business in America for years. It's not called a golden parachute for nothing.

It's game over for Staples. Unless they are bought out from another company, Staples is going to be joining Borders in the big line of retailers that thought they were too big to fail.

Stop these jackwagons crapping and urinating on the floors. Spent 12 hours in the St. Louis distro center and my eyes watered all day from the foul smell. Threw up during my lunch break. Wish I could catch one of these dipshits doing this.

Abandoning the retail stores is a stupid move, the stores keep the brand in the mind of customers. Staples your brand cannot survive without consumers being reminded of it. I'm sorry, I know you are probably proud of your company, but when people go online to order something the first brand to pop in most people's minds is Amazon or Wal-Mart.

Anonymous45459 the fact that they took bonuses and/or stock while the people in the stores work for slightly above minimum wage to push the executive's failed flavor of the month proves they lack leadership qualities. Leaders lead by example and take responsibility for their failings instead of closing another store.

The harsh reality is that due to upper management not responding well or quickly enough to a changing market and economy the retail side of Staples is sinking. That isn't to say all Staples stores need to go, but for the company to remain viable many people will be out of a job due to the poor leadership of the executives. The company's money is being made by the website and the people working in the stores. If Staples wants to keep making money they absolutely must invest in the well being of those people. Look at Amazon (kicking Staples's ass by the way) they actually take care of the people that are dealing with customers. From what I have seen Staples associates look stressed and unhappy, guess what folks that reflects in their attitude towards the customers they interact with in your stores. If you treat your associates like crap and pay them a paltry sum then you are going to get the bare minimum. Here is my thought, if Staples keeps going like it is and tries to go to near completely online and abandons the retail side Staples will fall to Amazon. There is no way around it, Staples will fail. There is too much competition online, Staples has the advantage of having retail stores where Amazon does not. Yes operating expenses for brick and mortar stores are high, but damn it sure is easy to take that item that you had shipped from a website and return it to a store and then grab some last minute items you forgot to order while you're there. Staples retail keeps focusing on these "flavor of the month" things when they need to perfect the basics first, youre putting the cart before the horse. You've stripped your stores to where I find one associate on the floor helping customers while 2 more are trying to hang signs or set stupid Spongebob Squarepants displays. That isn't your customer Staples, I saw piles of that Spongebob crap on clearance. Where was the common sense in putting that in your stores to take up shelf space and then sell it for what I assume is below cost.

Get rid of Sargent, Doody, Demos and Otis. All dead weight. But it is to late. Inertia has taken effect and this company (or at least the retail division) is on a downward spiral that can't be recovered from .... If I was in the position of an activist shareholder I would seriously push for all the execs to go... the fact that Staples is tanking is proof they can't do their jobs. The fact that they took bonuses shows they are scumbags.
