Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Post your layoff meeting time here

Just received a non-descript meeting invite for tomorrow morning at 10:30am with a VP (3 levels above my direct manager, who is a director) I rarely meet with. Title of the invite is "meeting"

It is a packaged deal an they will not negotiate - they will tell you that the package offered is very generous and significantly better than an industry standard package. You will have an option of refusing it and legally pursuing what you feel is an appropriate compensation for severing ties. Sorry.

so, at which point do you negotiate with them? I want to ask for some added things like healthcare coverage. Do you believe that you need to voice your demands right on the spot or do you have time to come back with your ask list?

You will be summoned as a group, the VP will give you a spiel, hard times blah blah, and then they will split you - one group will be returing to your desks while the other folks (probably a few) will be take to already set up offices where a combination of HR and VPs will give you the message. That's what they did at my old company.

Anonymous52264 is correct. It's normally the VP who will deliver the news.

@Anonymous52246: It's usually a VP plus a representative from HR. Typically it's done one-on-one and not in a group setting though... Perhaps the VP may want to inform your team that he/she is being axed too?

Our team has a similar meeting invite

All members of my team, My manager, the director, all have been invited by the vice Pres.

Like it said in the post, we have never met this Vice president

Layoffs are almost always done by the HRs(i've seen a few in my lifetime)

It's not the Vice president's job to call people and tell them that they are fired,

At least this much I'm sure.

Sometimes I have a feeling that all the posts are crafted by the same guy who's just pulling our leg. Is it really going to be this bad?

Anonymous52200 - this makes sense, yes, better to do it mid week

wasn't there a message just about 2 weeks about about some type of a presentation about identifying and preventing violence at workplace? Talking about perfect timing....

They don't do layoffs on fridays anymore because the person being laid off doesn't have access to resources that can help lessen the impact (career placement and counseling services for example) and can only sulk over the weekend..in the extreme case, the sense of hopelessness could lead to workplace violence/vengeance

They want to make sure the employee has immediate assistance so they have a way out..ie start talks of internal transfer or getting help with looking for their next job

This is definitely not a rumor..entire row of cubes in my group will be empty by week's end

VPs self destruct, it's called a SRIF or selfreduction

Who lays off VPs then if VPs deliver the message to all the folks?

I am in San Diego and I did not hear that anyone got an invite for tomorrow. This may be just a rumor, I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow. Typically, they do layoffs on Fridays, not sure why anyone would want to make a mid-week move.
