I love the smell of lay offs in the morning air

The layoffs occurred on March 26th of 2013. You had to leave the premises that day. But they paid you/had your benefits through April 1st. (a whole 4 days!) then got a week severance for each year worked plus any vacation time.
Too true, other adjectives I am to polite to print. And futility would be one that would have content.
Good points. Perhaps I should have qualified my theory by saying qualified, educated, intelligent management may wait for the end of the month. Those adjectives don't precede Follett's management team.
Didn't they layoff people at the beginning of April last year? Not month end. And the 600 employees laid off last year was the first week of November.
not trying to be overly optimistic, but...
If the company cuts employees with benefits at the beginning of the month, they're stuck paying those benefits throughout the month. Wouldn't it make it less likely that they'll cut now. Additionally, quarter schools will begin their spring quarter at the end of this month. They'll need the staffing.
While I can't dismiss a month-end layoff, laying off now would seem to accomplish the same goal as laying off at the end of the month. Spring cleaning, if you will.
Remember, if there is pressure to work against your colleagues, you're really working against yourself. The winning gladiator didn't really win, they temporarily pushed back their own term date. Don't let this group of sorry ass managers do that to you.
Then again, beware the ides of march.
I'm sure not counting on getting a bonus. All year long they said the 'gate' was open, suddenly nothing. Feels like they set this up with an impossible goal so they could avoid giving out bonuses. Bet Mary Lee gets a big fat bonus for putting an end to bonuses.
...smells like futility....
