Management came in guns blazing, realized too late they are over their heads, the problems were bigger then they had assumed, and painted themselves into corners by making to many promises to the board and ML. Now they are stuck. Malinvestment in technology and processes by previous management definitely created this situation but new management is forcing too much change too fast. This is causing good employees to leave because of all of the chaos being created. What is left at the core? Weak, incompetent middle managers (yes men/woman who never challenge leadership) who have spent their entire careers at follett, who have never worked anywhere else and are not true leaders due to lack of this business perspective, and low level employees who are mostly under paid and over worked.
