Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

All of the execs in their town halls used to repeat over and over the importance of skills pivoting

And in the last year and a half or so, almost nothing from any of them. It's almost as if they knew from day one that all of the training made available was useless, trivial information and that the meme of employees having to update their skills and that everything the employees needed to do so was at their fingertips was just a CYA for what would eventually come - a massive game of job opportunity musical chairs to the tune of thousands of layoffs.

There's no reason for them to spout on about people needing to become 145 IQ software engineers anymore because they are already past the phase of guilt tripping employees and deflecting their own bad decision making. The game of musical chairs is well on it's course.

Err.. I'm pretty sure if someone tells you to train for your next job, it's because they are getting rid of your current job. But, then you are surprised when your job is gone?

@pvw …."just wondering why they spent so much money to implement it only to have an excuse to let people go (who did not skill up)."

I can't tell you how many folks I know that did "skill up" that were shown the door. To be fair though, in many cases (not all) these folks weren't particularly good at the jobs they were supposed to be doing on a daily basis. That will always make you a target, regardless of your nanos, micros, and picos.

"The pivot, train yourself for your next job are all complete BS." Yep - I was the only person in my group working on a much pushed nanodegree. Guess who got surplussed? Me, of course.

The pivot, train yourself for your next job are all complete BS. I took the training, got the certificates and was still surplussed in March.

the Udemey classes were worthless and there was no openings to move to different groups due to the silo's in place.

"pivot" = nonsense. Plenty of management I know got pivoted right out the door despite an impressive Learning Path course load. Bunch of nonsense. And those that remain simply must pickup the additional work load...does not leave much time for "pivoting".

@ymm - "media and wireless are the stalwarts that will survive". Wireless you say? Tell that to the folks in RAN and mobility C&E who took a 5 - 10% hit in August 2018.

And it may be true that growth in wireline is coming to an end, but you don't seem to have any concern as to why that is.. Hint, it has nothing to do with lack of customer demand and everything to do with the C-suite trying to make more money for themselves.

Truth++++++

The classes they were a joke and I’m no way help pivoting. They were a total waste of time and apparently had some other motive.

If you haven't updated needed skills to still be employed after next year, they can't change that now. There still is a number to be met by EOY 2020, and they will get there one way or another. If you are not in a business unit that will not exist in the future then you better have an exit strategy. Growth in wires is done, media and wireless are the stalwarts that will survive.

I thought the same but when you consider all the money that has been spent for TU, LWD, Udacity, and that site we had a 2 year subscription to -- It makes me have my doubts about their intention. They could have still made a big deal about the skills pivot w/out going to the extent they did to provide the training. I am not suggesting the training was useful in anyway, just wondering why they spent so much money to implement it only to have an excuse to let people go (who did not skill up).
