Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

@hxf...Good stuff! I believe if Maw Bell was still rolling we would have fiber and cell service to every house in America. The regulated monopoly provided the "we can afford to" means of serving our customers, proven by how well Bell got the services out to the masses, whether that be a phone in every town, to party lines, to private lines down at the end of the dirt road. Bell got the latest services to the customers because there was nothing or no one else standing in their way.

In today's deregulated competitive market it blows my mind how we don't serve customers. T should have the "we can't afford not to" attitude. The folks at the end of the dirt road aren't much, but there are thousands of them and they would be customers for life if someone would give them a chance. Fiber backbones are already in place to most areas. Unreal how many man hours have been spent patching copper when fiber could have been ran out there and paid for itself many times over. It's sad to see the revenue that we are refusing to take advantage of.

Some interesting replied on this one. All I have to add is a tech came to the apartment complex today to fix some Direct TV issues. It wasn’t an AT&T employee, but a 3rd party contractor. That about sums up the direction of the company.

@CRM, do you think AT&T is staying strong under Randall's leadership? There are different degrees and types of capitalism. At one end, you have competitive capitalism made up of privately owned businesses competing against each other in the marketplace. This is the form of economy our country was founded upon.

At the other extreme, you have giant corporate collectives monopolizing their markets and colluding with their government for favorable treatment. When you have a few gigantic corporations dominating the economy, you have a form of economy that has more in common with a Soviet command economy than competitive capitalism.

There is no reason we should have to accept a form of economy where corporations are completely unregulated by government oversight and only serve the interests of the executives and the shareholders. There is no reason we should not demand our businesses also serve the interests of their customers, employees and communities.

If you do not have a competitive capitalism, and in many sectors we do not any more, you must have oversight of businesses. We should not accept a system where a tiny percent of the population control our nation's wealth and have excessive access to government and the rest of us are impoverished and powerless.

Sad truth is they don't need probably 3/4ths of us. Copper served our customers well and made our paychecks for many years but it is not the future. Very small # of folks needed to run the fiber network. I see T selling off the regulated copper network(unless a viable wireless solution is reached) and keeping the deregulated fiber network. I believe if the copper network stays it will eventually be government subsidized. All that being said, it's hard to fight/negotiate contracts for folks they don't need. I guess the best you can do is try to make things as good as possible for those who remain.

it makes me laugh when i read or hear, T back down, T worried...what's wrong with you people, why you don't learn.. this is no Russia's socialism, this is capitalism where everything is meant to make businesses and corporations win, so they stay strong and employ more people.

union is a business, union always play the same scenario, get people excited first, then say c-ap about the company, then say company proposal is a joke and we are fighting it ( to justify the dues you are paying) then allow the company to write a final draft where they just give you a little more money than the last draft and increase your healthcare cost and deductible to cover for what seem to be a win in wages, add cost of living and money inflation, you'll be doing more for less and smiling.

the worst is when they say agreements reached and members voted yes, but you know no one who voted yes and you know no one who know remotely someone not even in another state that voted yes.

you'll get what the company was planing to give you and you'll do what company wanted you to do, this is a capitalist county, i don't like it hardcore like this, but that's why we are number 1, god bless America.

Wouldn’t surprise me if true as D4 is short sighted. They can’t see that att is worried about D3 being out of contract in August. Last thing they want is D3 and D4 to join forces. All they have to do is hold out a couple of months and work on a better contract with D3. But nope, it’s more likely to be 2015 all over again.
