Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Ageism is rampant and systemic

Applied for, on two separate occasions, positions with a local company (a regulated entity). Despite multiple degrees, and skill sets commensurate with both postings, I heard crickets (I'm over 50). A relative applied to this same company (an IT position). Despite no college degree, was called in/had an interview. This relative's age was high 30's. I'd like to believe there is no correlation - my BS detector says otherwise. Friends in similar situations are finding the same thing - as another poster noted, ageism is rampant and systemic. I factored this when running the numbers for the VSP and now glad that I did.

@alib This is so true. For those of us who declined Infosys, in my area, they are replacing us at a minimum of 2 or 3 warm bodies to 1. Sorry to tell them 0% capability to hit the ground running and do the job x 3 still equals 0%. IT response has always been to throw more vs. the correct resources at a problem. Glad I am leaving.

Mid 50s here. I have no doubt my age and experience are hurting me. People see how many years I have in IT and know I'll be expecting a high pay (which I do expect). Companies do not care about experience. They just want to throw hundreds of warm bodies into seats and hope for the best.

You will get yours too, and when it happens, it should be slow and painful.

The other reoccurring question from HR is way did you stay at VZ for 15 yours....only one employer?

You cannot win, they know you are hiding your age. They no longer want to see long term employees anymore, only people who jump around...the young ones.

Leave dates off your resume. Only use the last 15 tears of experience on your resume.

If this is your vision for the future, then the 1% win and everyone else is on poverty, and there we be a new civil war. And we better learn the speak Chinese or Russian, as they will just walk in the US, as there will be no one left to defend your rights. Do not laugh, past history and prophecy predict this.

It's not so much about age discrimination. Why pay an American health insurance, 401k, and a livable wage? Most jobs at Verizon can be outsourced, automated, or accomplished by cheap temp workers. "The Times They Are A-Changin"

I would say to those who need a job, come back as a contractor if you can and you have the opportunity. I know that's probably not what you had in mind but do that and still look for another job, at least you will be getting a paycheck and the fact is, it's easier to get a job when you already have a job. I think companies look at you not working in a really negative light, regardless of the reason.

There is definitely age discrimination out there, problem is proveing it. Always been there always will be there.
